Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe with around 9.6 million inhabitants. Located in the Pannonian Basin and traversed by the Danube, the country borders on Slovakia and Ukraine to the north, Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south and Slovenia and Austria to the west. The capital and largest city is Budapest; Other major cities include Debrecen, Szeged, Miskolc, Pécs and Győr.

Hungary was one of the first Eastern Bloc countries to become a democracy on October 23, 1989 and joined NATO in 1999. The country has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and, together with Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, forms the Visegrád Group.

However, since right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán took office in 2010, the country has again become increasingly authoritarian. Therefore, in 2022, the European Commission initiated constitutional proceedings against a member state for the first time. The European Parliament also denied a member state the right to be a democracy for the first time. In the same year, the other EU states blocked the payment of several billion euros to a member state for the first time for this reason.
