…a re-imagining of the 1986 composition commissioned by the Seattle Arts Commission and Earshot Jazz, “The Suite for Jazz Quintet” was originally recorded and performed in Seattle, WA  with the group Brief Encounter…

The Suite for Jazz Quintet was written as a travelogue of my multiple journeys across the United Sates between 1985 and 1986. I wanted to look backwards, to my past and connect it to the present, but it soon became apparent both here and in my other remote connections that there is no real “backwards”. There is only the present and what survives of the past in the present. So the re-imagining I had anticipated ends up really being about memory, data and relics. I felt a moral responsibility to be true to what happened knowing that everyone’s experience of the world is subjective and prone to amnesia, fictionalization and contention.
