This talk was offered as part of our Thomistic Circles Series, "Neuroscience and the Soul" held at DHS on February 28th & 29th, 2020.

Fr. Anselm Ramelow, O.P. is Professor of Philosophy and Philosophy Department Chair at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, CA. He holds a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Munich. At Munich, he studied with Robert Spaemann, and wrote a dissertation titled "Gott, Freiheit, Weltenwahl. Die Metaphysik der Willensfreiheit zwischen Antonio Perez, S. J. (1599-1649) und G.W. Leibniz (1646-1716," investigating the concept of "the best of all possible worlds." In 2018, he published the first comprehensive, article-length overview of Robert Spaemann's thought in Communio. He regularly teaches courses on modern philosophy and theology, covering Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Schleiermacher, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, Gadamer, phenomenology, Heidegger, and the linguistic turn in philosophy and theology.

The Assignment: Make music inspired by a line from A Wizard of Earthsea: “For a word to be spoken, there must be silence. Before, and after.”

Originally I just wanted to make five minutes of interchanching deep pad and noisy something, with a lot of non-silent space between them. I added some ambient field recordings in these spaces, because the name of the track was intended to be 'The Impossibility of Being Silent'.

But then my mi clouds produced some sounds of it's own and I liked it. At the end I had to reintroduce silence to all parts. All in all I hope this to be considered as a tentative approach to silence, with an increase towards the end.

Album: Hearken Beach

A Tentative Approach To Silence [disquiet0451]

Every element in this song is made from three samples of ice cubes in a glass that I recorded on my phone. I put the samples in Ableton and with Simpler and sound design editing (Effects, panning, sample manipulation etc.) I created around 10 drum elements and 3 melodic elements from these samples. Plus I spread the raw samples into the track, with very light pan editing. I put the rhythms down quite quickly, because I wanted to make this track as fast as possible. Hope you enjoy!

This is a submission for the Disquiet Junto 0474: Police Action

I built this track from the excellent collaboration of @daniel-diaz and @forcedamage from Junto 0473. Respect.

Fifths Damage (https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz/fifths-damage-21012021-disquiet0473) had a very strong western feel, and also a feeling of being balanced between sentiment and action. We are each trapped in a dynamic equilibrium that gets us through the day, but the ground is shifting and the system is out of balance. The Ostrich is one of the last remaining flightless birds; surely that is not our fate? Make a plan.

I added a rhythm track to what I received, starting with the output form the Logic Drummer in hip-hop mode and then editing the results until they locked to the groove that was there, choosing a nice acoustic kit emulation, and running the track through a Fatso EL7X. Other tools used included a coles 4038, an iphone, Phil Moore's excellent Retro PowerStrip, an A&H board, Valhalla plugins, and Ozone for a quick and dirty mastering pass.

The lyrics came from the feeling above, and from fighting off stockholm syndrome from all the decades since Reagan and Thatcher.

The samples are from the 'crying indian' public service announcement of the last century, and the extinction rebellion of this century.

I basically had 4 tracks with different effects that I switched between kind of haphazardly. one with delay, one pitch shifted down 6 half steps, one with LFO and resonator, and the original track which I was going to leave alone but then I decided to make it sound like a clock radio with saturation and EQ.
