“Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows” will be released on Janaury 28th, 2014!

 

Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is the fourth Mello Music Group compilation – previous compilations include Mental Liberation, Helpless Dreamer, and Self Sacrifice. It’s also perhaps our best to date! 

The album showcases MMG’s ever-evolving roster of top-tier producers and rappers, many of whom (e.g. Oddisee, Quelle Chris, Has-Lo) fill both roles with equal dexterity. Additionally, it features several artists MMG plans to collaborate with in 2014, a testament to our commitment to working with those who possess singular sonic and lyrical abilities. 

Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is at once compact and comprehensive. Clocking in at twenty tracks, there is not a minute wasted and not a miss in sight. It is diverse and yet somehow cohesive, tailor made to rock your car speakers and your brain stem. It is MMG’s reminder that hip-hop is alive and well, and a reintroduction to a label that’s tried never to forget what makes music compelling. 

With ten distinctive producers behind the boards, the soundscapes on Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows cover the map and the album is all the better for it. Oddisee of course helms the opener and tracks throughout with a musicality like few in Hip-Hop today. L’Orange brings subtle, jazzy suites to the table, and Quelle Chris provides dusty samples looped over hard-hitting drums as well as anyone else on the record. Jeremiah Jae also makes sure the bass-rattling, electronic bangers coming out of L.A.’s beat scene are well represented. Nothing here is solely run-of-the-mill boom-bap. Each beat is far richer and more inventive, able to play on its own and provide the perfect complement to the raps at hand. 

As far as the rhymes are concerned, the rappers we’ve selected for Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows leave nothing to chance. MMG heavyweights like yU and Has-lo cut with long practiced precision, and newcomers like Castle are in top form. The same can also be said of Hellfyre Club features Open Mike Eagle and Milo. Regardless of who’s on the mic, scores of bare-knuckle battle rap bars are tempered with rhymes both emotionally raw and mentally challenging. The MCs on our comp are intelligent and self-aware, capable of the comic, tragic, and in-between at the sound of a snare. They have an old-school reverence for rhyme with a modern state of mind and modern problems. Come-up or comedown, shine or shadow, friend or foe – they are fearless in confronting all fears.   

Above all, Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is MMG’s opening salvo for the New Year, a sign of the great and innovative music we plan to release. We’re proud to call it the first 2014 jewel in the crown of our crest.

Oddisee - Invisible Walls

Everywhere January 28, 2014

Following a triumphant 2013 for the Mello Music Group label, with full-length releases from Oddisee, Quelle Chris, Ugly Heroes, 14KT and Gensu Dean & Planet Asia to name a few, Mandala Vol. 2, Today’s Mathematics celebrates the breadth of talent on deck over sixteen carefully-selected new tracks. Showcasing the depth of lyricists and producers that the MMG squad has to offer, the LP delivers everything from brag rap workouts, electro funk excursions, tales of relationships turned sour and late night kush soundtracks. 

Audible Doctor contributes three cuts - “No Design To This” features former Onyx MC Fredro Starr, and bodes well for their forthcoming album project, while “Space Age Love” is a rolling instrumental groove built upon layered vocal snippets and horn hits, while “The Last Real One” combines the minds of veteran PRT rapper Wise Intelligent with young gun Has-Lo. 

Gensu Dean provides the backing for Yarbrough’s verbal assault on “Stand Hard In A Circle Of Thieves,” unleashes menacing keys for “Advanced Degrees” (featuring Howard Lloyd on vocal duties) and brings that 12-bit grit for Blacastan to let loose with for the punishing “Stardust.” Apollo Brown teams up with Murs for the engaging narrative of “The Pain Is Gone,” before lacing the Ugly Heroes with a melancholy backdrop for “Pay Attention.”

The Heroes also contribute “Low Serotonin” over a blistering Oddisee beat, while third of the trio Verbal Kent reunites with Kaz 1 for “Beast Mode,” which also boasts some heavy scratch-hook work from the legendary DJ Eclipse. Def Dee laces Jamall Bufford’s “Keep It On The Hush” with an early 90’s N-Tyce vocal grab for the hook, and duets with yU on the breezy “Listen To Me.” 14KT’s sole contribution is the powerful “Up” with songstress Muhsinah, while Duke Westlake recruits former Little Brother MC Rapper Big Pooh and Stik Figa from Kansas for the head-nodding “Juk.”
 
Rounding off proceedings, Oddisee provides the masterfully-constructed “Le Boulevard Montmartre” instrumental, sporting crunchy snares and filtered bass in a manner that would make Pete Rock proud, while Georgia Anne Muldrow‘s “Mantra (Tut’s Revenge)” recalls the sound of early LA electro greats such as The Egyptian Lover and the Arabian Prince with a dusted, addictive groove.

Acting as both an ideal introduction to the Mello Music Group roster for newer listeners and a celebration of the strength of the label for existing fans, Mandala Vol. 2, Today’s Mathematics is an essential experience for anyone with an ear for soulful music that isn’t afraid to stay down to earth while shooting for the stars.

L'Orange Signs 3 Album Deal w/ Mello Music Group

The Deal:
After selling out the first three pressings of his vinyl in under 30 days, old soul producer L'Orange has signed a 3 album production deal with MMG for 2014 & 2015.  Slated to create a combination of projects from instrumental, to jazz singers, to alternative edged collaborations with emcees, L'Orange is looking to bring his distinct sound to Mello's audience, while continuing to push the boundaries of his musical explorations. 

The Sound:
Prohibition era soul samples combine with lingering smoke in the air on L'Orange productions.  Able to bring the crackle of vintage radio back in head nodding introspective journeys, L'Orange's ability lies in making complex productions seamless, allowing listeners to slide into another world. L'Orange's talent as a producer is his ability to develop full visions that create environments for artists and listeners alike. L'Orange is somewhere between early DJ Shadow, Madlib, Portishead, and Billie Holiday. 

The Instant Grat:
L'Orange recently recruited Mr. Lif & John Robinson for his contribution to the MMG compilation "Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows".  The track, titled "The Lost Nova", combines jazz rhythms, classic crackle, and intricate drum patterns for the raspy voiced Mr. Lif to tell his tale of verbal kumite (組手) and whirlwind zephyrs, while John Robinson takes listeners to the crystal city via his astro-physical-lyrical gift and extra-galactic tactics.

"We’ve all been big fans of James Brown since we’ve been involved in music and have played ‘In The Middle’ regularly on our live tours. It felt like a natural fit for the Orlando project, particularly as we have added an Afro swing to the track. We first played the track with Orlando at a London gig last year and he got into it in the studio straight away – his sax solo here was the very first take. James Brown and his band loved Orlando when they saw him play in Ibadan back in the ‘60s and the two of them met up and talked at J.B.’s hotel. So, for lots of reasons, this felt like a natural one to include.”
