The collaboration between Scott Cortez and thisquietarmy doesn’t really come as a surprise. The latter acknowledges that the previous works from Cortez (under the lovesliescrushing moniker) greatly influenced his work, to the point of using the same way of writing the band’s name (no capital letter and no spaces between words) for his actual solo project. The main thing that they have in common is their unconventional use of the guitar, which they consider as a signal generator. They then process those sounds through various effects, to obtain a different result than that of the original signal until the source becomes almost undetectable. Meridians is also the first vinyl production from thisquietarmy, as it is Scott Cortez’s first under his real name.

Meridians is a cross-project between the two artists. Separated by 1.000 miles, Eric Quach (thisquietarmy) and Scott Cortez simultaneously began to record the first guitar layer for both sides on December 18th 2009 at 1pm EST. The original drone was supposed to be played like a three tones piece, with the use of a different string for each tone. They then sent the result to each other to work on the piece that the other had begun. This is how they recorded the two tracks that feature on this record.
This is definitely an unusual practice, far from the classic split exercise and the result is fascinating: abstract, radiant and hypnotic drones that intertwine with numerous harmonic structures. They created a coherent whole that goes beyond their unique recording method.
Written and pressed to be played at 45 rpm, the record can also be played at 33 rpm. Darker and more mystical, the result is stunning.

Their music, drones played with traditional and acoustic instruments is an invitation to the dance frantically, leading to euphoria or trance.

Cyril Bondi and d'incise are well-known swiss experimental musicians. They have a huge panel of collaborative and solo records. Cyril Bondi is also known for his playing in the jazz improv trio Plaistow. They play together in Diatribes.

Alexis Degrenier is a french composer, specialist in tranditionnal and slanted music. He plays in Ensemble Minisym that perform Moondog music.

Muxama is the 34th reference of three:four’s catalog. It has been obvious that the symbolic number should be honoured by an artist that we admire. Norberto Lobo is the one. 
With Fornalha, his first record on three:four released two years ago, Norberto Lobo began to move from a fingerpicking into a more personal and adventurous playing. Muxama is the following step. The reference to americana music are less and less obvious. His technique skills are not only in his hands but primarily in his feet. Adding live effects to his guitar playing, Norberto Lobo distorts the time and space to bring music in a new dimension. Modulating volume, intensity, phase and pitch he enters in a nonlinear, free interpretation of his pieces. All classical bearings fall apart; Norberto Lobo leads you to a new way to grasp his music. In “La claire fontaine” the french writer David Bosc says about Gustave Courbet “No way is the way of freedom. People, when they are free, go through all paths”. So does Norberto Lobo.

La bride [The Bridle], which is here released by the Lausanne-based three:four label (Norberto Lobo, Danny Oxenberg & Bear Galvin, Mike Wexler, etc.), is their second album and it is perhaps even more surprising.
What do we find here? Ten new songs from old times, reimagined from top to bottom, arranged with equal parts madness and precision. One dies always and often in the rolling waves and riptides of these songs without refrain. You can only love furiously and you lose yourself almost everywhere. One hears vicious tales sung in a language characterized by insane turns of phrase. Animals have the word and the forest frightens to death, children make love, and if fathers die by the swords of their sons, it is well deserved. But Eloïse Decazes, more dancer than actress, more visual artist than storyteller, more musician than anything else, does not embellish the literal, never dramatizes her narratives, preferring to blow her melodies like glass or scrub and distill them to limestone and chalk, seeking air in the wooly outlines of verses. Her voice like dawn and her curious formations accompanied by the multiple sonic stances of Chenaux are like myriad flares that inscribe a ballet of shadows and lights in the dark material of the themes, very slow and very beautiful. One hears these firmly unstable arpeggios played on nylon strings that interwoven patterns of electric guitar come to disturb or even liquefy like waves. It is comprised of surprises and conflicting emotions. Furthermore, we are stunned by the way this curious album sometimes induces vertigo, with its vocal majesty and fake crawling violins, its harmonic suicides and misleading solos; how handily it subverts its forms, but without fuss, with kindness and in the utmost calm.
Let us be clear: La bride is not folk music, nor even so-called traditional music. It is an album of new music dreamt and conceived from very old melodies, an observation testified to by its production - all in shifting stereo - its soft psychedelia, a dialogue with a certain intrepid modernity (Monk, Cage, Derek Bailey and the "Obscure" records of Brian Eno are all visible from here), the love of inquiry and peregrinations for a present that is ceaselessly renewed.

The Xvoto Reels provides additional proof (if necessary) that Razen is an audacious group. If the Belgian band led by the duo Brecht Ameel and Kim Delcour has explored different musical worlds with changing formations, the involuntary irruption of a sixth “member” has upset the content of this new album. Through these brutal and unpredictable interventions, it made an ambitious album - recording live improvisations in a church with an organ and a tabla - unique.

“When we listened to the tape reels months after the recording sessions at the St Martin’s Church, we were forced into noticing that a presence had placed itself on all of the recordings. A presence playing tricks with the dynamics and the church acoustics, leaving inexplainable sound prints and cuts on the reels, turning our music into stray phantoms, as if what was left on the tapes was only a vague recollection of the sessions, reducing the slowed down ragas we had had in mind into a version so different and frayed yet at the same time so layered and eternal, that at first we had a hard time recognizing our original ideas, 
let alone deciding whether this was not too personal, intimate and obscure at all to let it out into the world, because what we had in our hands now, was the sound of a deeply private dream, a message from the subconscious, rather than a collection of tracks by five improvising musicians.

It did not take us long before we observed that what was lost in terms of our original expectations of these recordings (the precision of our tunings and interplay, proper endings and beginnings, clearer definition of sound) we had suddenly gained on other and far more worthier levels; the levels of randomness, unexpectedness and irrationality, precisely the sort of qualities our improvised music had always embraced, which were now put to the fore in a manner we had not yet encountered.

So here it is. More than the sum of tabla + hurdy gurdy + recorders + double bass + church organ. More than the sum of 5 musicians + tape engineer + church acoustics. 
The Xvoto Reels – a prayer in the halflight, a comforting sermon out of St Martin’s Church - is a version of Razen where the music played itself, and chance dictated what essence of this was allowed to be captured. We look back on those days in August as a moment in time where in fact, we ourselves and all those involved had become the instruments, in a way such as described by Inayat Khan: “I played the vina until my heart had changed into the same instrument. Ever since I have become His instrument, and whenever He wishes, He plays me with His music”.

La Tène's previous album 'Vouerca/Fahy', released at the end of April 2016 on the promising  three:four label, was rapidly out-of-print after a long series of concerts throughout France and neighboring countries. Thanks to this immediate success, they were invited to play the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival after appearances at the Sonic Protest Festival in Paris, Ring Ring in Serbia and at the Kilbi Festival in Düdingen.

Their second album, 'Tardive/Issime', was recorded in January 2017. It is to be released on September 22nd, 2017, as the first collaborative release between Les Disques Bongo Joe and three:four.

If this second opus relies on the same method of composition, it employs a decidedly richer timbral palette, combining long heavy descending harmonium sweeps, relentless percussion, and the ever more precise patterns and drones of the hurdy-gurdy.

'Tardive/Issime', something of a mirror to its predecessor, nevertheless reveals a few phantoms in the course of listening, prefiguring a music still to come.

"The twentieth century has had its share of poets exploring magic and mysticism. However, it is Kathleen Raine who has articulated the deepest spiritual vision throughout the entire body of her work. Having studied William Blake – and, in the process of doing so, reading all that he had read – Raine believed poetry to be an art-form that could open readers to an awareness of a divine, transcendental world which expresses itself to us through in the language of symbols.
As an example: for Raine, a tree is never ‘just’ a tree: it is a symbol of the unity of the universe. This symbol draws meaning from its presentation in the poem: it may blossom, decay, or be felled – each of these express different relationships between humanity and the universe. For Raine, nature and its symbols express an archetypal world, which she described as burning “with an interior light and glory, awe-inspiring.”
When we become acquainted with Raine’s symbols, we begin to see the world very differently: full of meanings and spiritual significance. Her vision of the poetic symbol has deeply influenced many artists – myself among them – and has led to a number of musical settings of her poetry. However, these are predominantly in the ‘art-song’ genre of classical composition – here, Raine’s simple and intimate language is often obscured by the compositional settings and vocal techniques that the classical idiom demands. What Delphine Dora has achieved here are naturalistic settings of Raine’s words, which present her poems in a new light. Delphine’s work interprets Raine’s poems in a style that is by turns ethereal, lively, melancholic and innocent – the last of these terms evoking the idea of the innocence of souls: who, being incarnated in the lower world, become corrupted and seek to return to their source through the gates of death.
Indeed, death is one of Raine’s prominent themes, and is explored on in the opening song on this album. H.G.A. sees Raine reflect on her proximity to her Holy Guardian Angel, who will soon lead her immortal soul away from sphere of creation, and, consequently, she will forget all that she now remembers about the material world. Many of us would be inclined to approach such a theme sombrely, but the melancholic sweetness of Delphine’s interpretation captures something of the yearning for the otherworldly and unknowable world of light that Raine believed to be the soul’s true habitation. This angel is the same as that sung about in Eudaimon, who sees her depart the celestial realms for the ‘prison house’ of the world, but who will one day bear her back to her true home in the stars.
Like Raine’s own poems, the songs on Eudaimon are pure in their simplicity and austere style. Yet they also shine with the crystalline fire of the world beyond: that same light which bleeds through the symbols that Raine believed helped our souls recall their original states. If you do not already know Raine’s work, there can be no better introduction."

Phil Legard is an academic and musician. Previously of Xenis Emputae Travelling Band and Ashtray Navigations, he now records under his own name, and collaborates with Layla Legard as Hawthonn. He teaches music production at Leeds Beckett University, where his research focuses on the role of esotericism in contemporary music-making.

Estrela is the third chapter of Norberto Lobo’s solo records on three:four. If it is easily identifiable by the black and white photography by António Júlio Duarte on the front cover, the music brings some newness: for the first time under his own name, Norberto Lobo is playing with a trio composed of Yaw Tembe (trumpet), Ricardo Jacinto (cello) and Marco Franco (drums). Paradoxically, it's accompanied by these experimented musicians that Estrela sounds like his most personal record to date.

Lobo's unique approach of composition claim some influences (Tom Zé, Moacir Santos, 50’s jazz) in a more assured way. Once again a result of his rich inner world, his puissant curiosity for life and people – fellow musicians, his peers, and audiences, other countries, languages and cultures – and a particular aesthetic disquietude to the musical language that he has been blessing us with his six strings.

Misztériumok is the third full-length record - their first on three:four - of Italian duo Amuleto, composed of Francesco Dillon and his cousin and three:four’s artist Riccardo Wanke. Following the route of previous releases this new album emerges as the fusion of composed and improvised forms and moves between contemporary and electronic music mixing acoustic, electronic and real world sounds. The music takes shapes from a progressive disclosure of sonic material that gradually manifests its nature: at times aggressive and distorted, other times ephemeral and intimate. Cello, electronics, field recordings and a large variety acoustic timbre merge into a unique sound. More intensively than before, Amuleto in these five pieces condenses their aesthetic within intense evolutions, concrete attacks and tight musical constructions. 
This work takes inspiration from a series of old photos (as negative silver bromide glass plates) found in the 'Feira da Ladra' flea market in Lisbon. They depict scenes of middle-European family life at the start of the 20th century mixing what seems an ephemeral serenity with an imminent sense of crisis and loss.

Named after an 1988 unreleased, to this date, Supreme Dicks song, 'Your Victorian Breasts' is a collection of 20 otherwise unreleased tracks by the likes of Alastair Galbraith, Black To Comm, A R P, Pigeons, Ignatz, William Tyler, Filipe Felizardo, Hamilton Yarns. It also hosts 3 new collective projects: Mendrugo, which features Josephine Foster joining forces with husband Victor Herrero, José Luis Herrero, José Luis Rico and Takuhiko Nochimoto; Raajmahal, the reunion of Pat Murano (No-Neck Blues Band, Decimus), Carla Baker (Baba Yaga, Flower Orgy) and Santa Wolanczyk (Flower Orgy); and Syracuse Ear, a first-class improv gathering featuring David Maranha, Manuel Mota, Margarida Garcia and Chris Corsano.

The comp's range stretches from demos (Date Palms, Arlt) to soundtracks (Roger Tellier-Craig), archival material shelved for years (Supreme Dicks), cover songs (Bridget St John as revisited by Alvarius B, Daniel Johnston by Circuit des Yeux, and an anonymous Serbian ballad by Eric Chenaux), live takes (Mendrugo, Syracuse Ear) and new studio works (Robert Hampson, Corridors, ...).

'Your Victorian Breasts' was compiled by Maxime Guitton, as the sequel to 'Err on The Good Side', a 10 unreleased track comp released on vinyl in 2009 by three:four records.

'Your Victorian Breasts' was mastered using Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) for the best quality sound reproduction available. It is released on double LP, gatefold sleeve. Artwork by Darryl Norsen. One-time pressing of 650 hand-numbered copies. Includes a download code for a free download of the album.

Three:Four Records was co-founded in 2008 by Gaëtan Seguin and Arnaud Guillet. Three:Four Records has been working since 2017 as a "mental stereo pair" made up of Seguin and Maxime Guitton, spreading their musical activities between Lausanne, Paris, Rome and Marseille. It is distributed by The Business (2).

Originally focusing on avant-folk, ambient and noise projects, the label has championed the debut albums of a number of artists and fostered a handful of collaborative efforts between established musicians, whilst promoting a wide array of musical styles and aesthetics (improvisation, songwriting, modern composition, experimental music, avant-rock, electronic and folk music, soundtracks, etc.). Through its patient mapping of a large family of artists across countries (Switzerland, Portugal, Canada, France, United States, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, etc.), three:four has been lately expanding its catalogue through a series of coproductions with partners in crime (Standard In-fi, A1000P, Bongo Joe, Feeding Tube, Meakusma, Carton)
