"The seasons are changing again. The warm summer breezes have given way to a chill, and what was once bursting with life and colour now lies dormant, waiting to be lifted again by the arrival of better days.

Winter is bleak – but it is beautiful. And for those of us who love music and live in cold countries, it is a special season.

A season that is defined by nights spent in dark, pulsing clubs – which seem to radiate the heat so sorely missed in the outside world – winter stands in stark contrast to the long days spent outdoors in the summer.

It is more intimate, more hidden away, more mysterious.

To celebrate this period of the year, we have once again brought together a group of hugely talented musicians to give their take on winter for the second instalment of our Seasons series. Each producer has delivered a unique, thrilling slice of music that encapsulates the colder months perfectly.

As we enter into this traditional period of hibernation, we turn to comforts such as music for warmth and inspiration, and to remind us that even in the bleakest times, beauty exists all around us."

A Ukrainian artist of distinction with an ever-growing fanbase, Stas Drive has continued to cause a stir with a blend of "techno, deep house and progressive". A triple century of production credits thus sit proudly against his name, signed to such luminary imprints as JOOF, Plattenbank and microCastle. Hitting the heights on Proton Music, 2018's "Abyssal" EP marked a high point as have remixes for Soulwerk, Navar and Roger Martinez. Now returning with twin original tracks, "Dogu" immediately impresses with its heavy beat and deep rhythm that is the perfect juxtaposition for a flowing melodic sequence to wax and wane across the seven-minute piece in freeform glory. A pitched oscillator marks the stripped back breakdown as the track picks up the pace in the second half with 16th note shakers and deep basslines. "Satori" continues the detuned oscillator narrative of its partner track as immaculately placed snare rolls denote dancefloor knowhow. A sumptuous bassline adds power and pace while a gloriously melodic breakdown creates a pause for breath before the second half drives forward with ease, blending rhythm and melody in a club-friendly stormer.

Iconic names withing the underground dance industry, Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic have been at the vanguard of progressive house and melodic techno for over a decade. 700 production credits bear witness to longevity and creativity as does the formation of the Mistique Music and Kunai Records imprints that serve as a vehicle for their own music plus a host of high-profile and rising artists. Finding their way on to the likes of Dave Seaman's Selador and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music has continued to enhance a golden reputation for the trio. 2017's original track, "Gamma Rays", marked a high point on Proton Music alongside remixes from Tone Depth and Mononoid, while July 2020's collaboration with Rick Pier O'Neil was another notable highlight. Returning to remix Stas Drive, the Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic remix of "Dogu" is a gloriously dark and menacing creation that revels in richly pulsating pads, heavy kick and syncopated synth riff. Making clever use of Stas' original components as the track progresses, the remix builds with ease with the distinctive pitched oscillator phrasing of the original making its presence felt, surrounded by a swathe of original production material.

Fresh from a remix of Lucas Degiorgi on Particles, Blood Groove & Kikis make a welcome return to Proton Music. Regulars on the likes of Silk Music which saw the release of their 2014 full-length "Wonderland" album to critical acclaim, the Latvian duo have also made high-profile appearances on ARVA, Armada and the Visceral compilation series. After a clutch of impressive remixes on Particles for the likes of Andre Sobota and GMJ, Blood Groove & Kikis return with a mesmeric reworking of "Dogu" that provides dancefloor prowess in abundance as a hypnotic bassline creates the framework for an evocative remix. Propelled forward with a glorious melodic phrase and echoes of Stas Drive's original, the searing analogue lead provides depth and intrigue that is fully heard at the breakdown and beyond into the rousing third movement.

A new awakening and musical epiphany finds Stas Drive once again at the centre of the musical universe with "Dogu / Satori" plus a pair of powerful remixes.

Jerusalem is a song that negates the violence of the historical city by describing it, instead, as a heavenly paradise of fairy-tale mountains, valleys and rivers, which will, one day, be home, sweet home. Wherever they go, the purity of their vocal interplay is overwhelmingly beautiful, the lyric is ultimately hopeful, and the inherent tone of their message is true to their spiritual beliefs.
