A relative newcomer to the progressive house scene, Mike Isai’s nascent production career has already seen a debut on the Nick Warren led, Hope Recordings, via September 2020’s “Pillars to Butterflies” EP. A March 2021 reworking of Shanil Alox’s “Algorithm” for Droid9 illustrated Isai’s remix capabilities, as the US star now debuts on Meanwhile with his twin-tracker.

Opening proceedings, “Home” is a dark and sultry piece that pulsates hypnotically through its near 9-minute voyage with a panoply of textured layers and white-noise effects. Quickly hitting its stride, a pounding kick is accompanied by an immaculately syncopated synth motif that provides the basis for a counterpoint phrase to sit elegantly on top in glittering repetitive pattern. Reaching a rousing filtered denouement at the mid-point, “Home” drops back into a familiar arrangement as all elements combine to impressive effect in the third movement.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic framework of its partner, “87 North” immediately impresses with its 16th note bassline and seismic kick. Another syncopated synth loop provides an imposing trademark production technique as haunting melodies drift over the mid-range, drenched in reverb and white-noise washes. Coruscating pads add further intrigue as the 7-minute piece evolves, coming fully to the fore in a ‘wall of sound’ breakdown, before the second half picks up the pace again with percussive intensity. The juxtaposition of meandering melodic threads and bassline urgency thus creates an impressively woven dynamism.

Another new artist to grace Meanwhile finds Arizona based Brenden LaBonte creating a potent wave of success with his Forerunners moniker. With over a double century of production credits to his name for some of the finest modern dance imprints, Sudbeat Music, Anjunadeep, and Black Hole have all played host to the US artist’s emotive soundscapes. Reworking “Home”, the Forerunners remix is chock full of the trademark soundscapes that characterise LaBonte’s work, with whispering melodies floating atop a powerful beat and ticking hi-hat groove. A relentless bassline sequence adds weight and poise over the 8-minute offering as subtle variations on Mike Isai’s original make their presence felt. Pausing for breath at a spine-tingling mid-point, cadenced bass groove and subtle melodic prowess hit the heights in the latter stages.

New music sees Mike Isai guided home by his north star, accompanied by a shining remix from Forerunners.

Time dissolves into oblivion, if someone pushes "play" on the right track at the right place and time. Well, not too long ago the universe pushed a monumental pause button causing time and with it life on earth to freeze - but: our hearts never did.

We kept them in a safe place. And now a new summer is here, one that invites the dancing feet back to the places we hold so dearly.

"A Mirror For The Sun" is a compilation of pieces, which strive for no less than be the soundtrack that awakens our spirits, now that the big play button has finally been pushed.

Her Majesty's Ship enlist a vital selection of names to remix regular label artist Rubin et le Paradoxe's September EP ‘X Raisons’, and they are Curses, Plaisir de France, Calling Marian and Theodora & Lockhart. First up is Rinse FM host Curses, the Berlin based New Yorker and dark disco stylist who likes shadowy sounds and rock licked grooves and puts them out on Bordello A Parigi, Throne Of Blood, and Ombra International. His fantastic remix is a chugger with haunting chords lighting up the dark corners of the dance floor. It has rubbery drums and popping hits as well as some sleazy French language vocals to really add to the intensity. Then comes Plaisir de France, well known for his remixes / edits of French pop songs and for more club focussed fair on Turbo and Prozac as Sweetlight. Here he goes for something with smeared synths spraying about the mix and dehumanized, heavily filtered vocals that bring a darkly futuristic vibe to his warped vision of disco. French producer Calling Marian runs her own label CVNT Records and mixes up techno, house and electro. That's the case here with a sleek, stripped back bit of techno with spooky vocals and stepping cold wave synths. Next up, Barbagallo bassist, producer and singer Theodora seeks to bring together the different poles of a diverse musical galaxy that sits somewhere between melancholy and dancing rhythms, and here links with fellow French artist Lockhart from the indie and electro pop scene. Together they go for a tripped out disco stomper with rich layers of chords and a noodling bassline that keeps you on your toes. This is a dazzling package of gritty, essential disco from the dark side.

Ghostly R&B is a recurring theme, with tracks like Puente & Rosch's "Serious Compassion" and "H.T.A.D." by SECT—Levine and Goldstein with Sergio Santos and Tanner Ross—referencing '80s dance-radio material in various zig-zagging ways. (The set's penultimate track, Teeloo's "Sooo Oooh," goes so far as to lift the vocals of Howard Johnson's 1982 hit, "So Fine.") Lee Foss, Art Department, Benoit & Sergio, Deniz Kurtel—the kings of new-school deepness are all accounted for, and while their appearance on an Soul Clap mix is hardly a shock, these artists are all at the top of their game right now. Soul Clap is as well, and they prove on Social Experiments 002 that they can stand there on their own.

UK duo Death on the Balcony's universal rhythms are no stranger to Behrouz's imprint, but this is the first time they've collaborated with German duo Flowers on Monday. Having crossed paths on labels such as Akbal and All Day I Dream, their sounds, styles and even aesthetic share similar inspirations and directions. It was only a matter of time before each kindred spirit entwines.
Four tracks deep, 'Ways & Means' brings out the best of everyone involved. Tailor made for Don't Sit On The Furniture's cosmic soul signature to the very last stitch, each cut ebbs and flows unhurriedly, hypnotically. From the gentle synth breezes and steel drum ripples of opener 'Crystal' to the final vocal echoes and last soldiering kick of 'Illusory', there's a hazy playfulness running throughout. Like everything both acts and the label have ever put out, there's a delicate balance of tones and textures that transcend any dancefloors many of us are still so far from seeing again. A perfect tonic for these turbulent times; let's hope more collaborations like this happen again in the future.
