It's a rare honor to hear the fruits of a musician's obsession with one particular aspect of the spectrum; be it an artist, a city, a label, or-- in this case-- a lifestyle. 

In the US, with the midterm elections fomenting, the seasons changing, climate chaos continuing it's relatively undisturbed course, and catastrophes and joys of all manner hiding in the wings and in plain sight, we're humbled to offer our 53rd episode; a glimpse into the proclivities of producer Tommy Metz. 

Tommy Metz is a Colorado-based abstract electronic producer & veteran of the scene, with releases on local labels too storied to recount: Plastic Sound Supply, Bocumast, Laserpalace and-- more recently-- the new Denver imprint Multidim Records. Growing up in Fort Collins and moving to Denver in 2002, he has been heavily and consistently involved in the DIY/Indie music scenes of Colorado. 

For the next hour, allow your mind-body-spirit to revel in the effervescent memory of a 10-year period between 1992 & 2002 & the fruits of Metz's deep dive into this thing called BRAINDANCE.

When we listen to— or better yet, are absorbed by— a rhythm, we are at the same time being enraptured by time signatures that bear unique genetic makeups and that have evolved over the course of human musicking. These time signatures code for the experiences of the people who have sounded them in celebration, idleness, mourning, and protest.  

Opening up the new year, with our dial set on listening to the events of this world, we are honored to present Radio Maghreb, @fanafellahin’s reminder that we have, in many ways, the countries of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan to thank for the for rhythms today construed as ‘techno’.

We are pleased to present ‘Hallways’ the third full length from Austin, Texas analogue hardware enthusiast Bill Converse. Immersed in the early days of the 90s midwest rave scene, Bill began DJing at a young age in Lansing, Michigan. Luminaries such as Claude Young, Traxx, and Derrick May were key early influences. Techno, noise, ambient and tape processing are all part of his uncanny sound palette. 
‘Hallways’ is an 80 minute journey spread across 12 tracks and 2 slabs of vinyl. All tracks were recorded directly to tape with no overdubs, made at Converse's home studio over the past 2 years. Bill says, “One idea for this album is 'through bardos’,  the gap or moment of transition between two things according to Buddhism. Like an experience in meditation and attempting to find realization/s on the way through the illusory and interdependent nature of good old fashioned REALITY.”  Built around crunchy synthesizers, harsh drum machines and jarring acid lines, the tracks share a darker tone than Bill’s previous albums and one song features guest vocals by music gourmet Carlos Souffront, a true DJ's DJ from Detroit. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each 2xLP is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh with rich purple and smokey turquoise kaleidoscopic patterns.

Denver's @ilind is the mind behind Abstract without Abstraction, a mix series "dedicated to deepening listeners relationships to time, liberation, joy, and resistance within the teeming entanglements of contemporary music." The series' genre-defying ethos and attention to detail constantly pushes artists to bring the same qualities to their contributions, and ilind's sets, too, are full of surprises, unabashedly drawing from a deep and varied catalogue of influences while still respecting the moment, and consistently invoking a sense of queer psychedelia.

"I generally take a very long time to put together mixes, punctuated by frenetic periods of activity and inspiration. This was no different.

I decided to answer the interview questions you provided before starting to explore the shape of the mix, and it came out colored by a really nonlinear sense of nostalgia; weaving together recent tracks by people that have been incredibly inspiring to me, bookended by older music that I have been listening to for a long time that I wanted to finally pay tribute to (namely jazz and Clicks & Cuts-era microhouse).

That said, I practiced a handful of times over a course of a few weeks, feeling really uncomfortable with the playlist and making little changes to it, until I finally rushed home to Denver from a trip to Phoenix, AZ — moving my flight up 5 hours to avoid landing in the middle of a snowstorm — just to record it straight through with no edits on my little Pioneer XDJ-RX. The mix has some really rough transitions in it (!) but a stream of emotional peaks that made it completely rewarding for me and interested in sharing it."
