2017 Playlists - Part 1

On Fridays, as the last work day of the week approaches 2100 hours,  the garbage and recycling chutes from arcologies around the world open, spilling any offerings of week from the upper levels to the lower levels. Orphans, drifters, miscreants, the augmented, illegals, the desperate, the unemployed, and sometimes the occasional adventurous upper level dweller will often await its opening eagerly. The junk heap begins to fill as this week's offerings of obsolete or broken technology, spoiled foodstuffs (and pristine offerings from earlier in the day), and the occasional body or firearm (from upper level gang violence) falls and tumbles out onto the depositing yard below.  

This is a wonderful bounty to be had for the destitute. While the nice automated deposit yards are usually controlled by bio-manufacturing or recycling corps, most of the ones where this ritual occurs are run by the local gangs, punks, or shadow societies. Safety standards at these gatherings are haphazard at best; there have been incidents that have occurred where some attendants were crushed by falling debris. The upper and lower level denizens usually have an understanding and respect the ritual as an cordial interchange. In a world of excess, sometimes convenience is a lot easier if everyone benefits. The "pit bosses" are also known for their fair and equitable treatment of all citizens of the lower levels. This gathering is known as "Funday" in the arcologies and hive cities in the North American Federated States. In South American Colonia (SAC), the locals call it "la misa", akin to the old Sunday religious gatherings that occurred in the early 21st century before religion was banned throughout the world.    

When the last of the refuse land in the junk heap and the garbage chutes close, the junk heap is secured by yard workers, inspected by the on-site safety manager, and sorted with help from some 1st gen HumanMashcine workers. Items are tagged and appraised accordingly.  Then, the local "priests" will come and give their blessings by saying a few incantations and related techno babble, giving thanks to the upper denizens for their generosity. The DJs and musicians will then start their set, cranking up the volume and pumping out some nice grooves from antique speakers and subwoofers. Thus begins the "Funday" festivities that will last until dawn. 

While the sorting and appraisal is occurring, the populace, eager to receive the offerings of the week, will approach the staging area of the deposit yard where pit workers will hand out a number of chits. Chits are used for the auctioning of the sorted goods. The number of chits are given are also dependent of your contribution towards lower level society. A slum-doc might be earn more chits, compared to a lower level enforcer.  

Once chits are handed out, the procession of the destitute will shuffle and dance in an orderly fashion towards the deposit yard. The sacred ritual of the dance, bound by tradition throughout the decades, is strictly adhered to. Individuals will patiently roam the deposit yard and place bids on items they value using their chits, similar to an open English auction. Food and drink vendors, subsidized by the pit bosses, will also offer their goods to the participants in return for chits that they can spend. Dancing, chanting, bidding, and general extolling of the generosity of upper level citizens reaches a fever pitch by midnight.

Procyon alveare, or hive raccoons commonly known, will often attend 'Funday' gatherings a few hours before midnight, preferring though to dance and observe from sidelines. Tonight on 'Wanderers of the Megacity: Funday Mass', we will be broadcasting live from Shikaakwa-Arco, taking a closer look at these nocturnal animals and their fascinating behavior that continues to surprise scientists.

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

M. Vaughan is a US native, a Virginia DC born who went to New York and lately traded lakeside views for a new life across the pond. 

Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten (from the Battery to the top of Manhattan) gave way to Alfama, Amoreiras, Chelas, and Mouraria, stretching from Belém to the top of Olivais. African, Brazilian, Goan, and Ukrainian influences—all converge in Lisbon!

Michael has released music on his own Super Tuff Records and has a knack for deep, highly engaging grooves filled with introspection and depth. These traits are especially evident in his Percebes debut, Hei-de Ter (a name of his own choosing, which translates to "I Shall Have").

Hei-de Ter is a binomial release, comprising "Bolota Perdida" and"Dar a Volta." 

The first track is a mid-tempo, Balearic deep house exploration marked by subtlety and sensitivity. It samples a beloved Portuguese fado song, placing it within a carefully crafted, almost maternal environment that balances yearning and desire."Dar a Volta," on the other hand, provides a wonderful counterpoint, offering a laid-back breakbeat moment reminiscent of classic Mo’Wax or G-Stone material.Taken together, the two tracks present an idealized, romantic vision of Lisbon—one that’s increasingly difficult to find amidst the growing dominance of tourism and hospitality industries.With Hei-de Ter, Mike fully embraces his role as a local DJ and producer, establishing himself as a true Lisbon soul boy. This release is sure to shine at deeper gigs and on radio alike.

A wonderful taste of Brooklyn boy @mvaughanmusic's upcoming 'True Life' album, 'Softly' encapsulates much of what the album stands for with its romantic mood and warm textures. Reversed pianos chords rub up against soft key twinkles and a classic jazz-funk drum break sped up to a peppy tempo. Beautiful, wintery stuff.

Brooklyn-based producer M.Vaughan has spent the better part of a decade crafting emotional electronic music.

His productions on labels like Freerange, Monologues, and his own Super Tuff merge warped synthesizers, simple melodies, and raw percussion into a fresh take on dance music, catching the attention of tastemakers like Laurent Garnier, Jimpster and Axel Boman.

His debut album, True Life, which lands on Super Tuff on February 5th , explores every genre from ambient to house and breaks with impressive cohesion. Taking its name from a phrase Vaughan and his older brother coined in their grade school years, meaning “I swear,” True Life is a ten-track diary told through synthesizers, samples, and drum machines.

The album naturally separates itself into two parts—a warm, organic opening and a cold, electronic close. “Softly” perfectly encapsulates the coziness of the album’s first half. Composed of delicate piano, dusty drum breaks, and layers of live guitar, the tune builds from a simple beat into a triumphantly melancholic anthem, reminiscent of Amygdala-era DJ Koze.

On the opposite end, “Timshel” is the hard-nosed standout of the back half. Inspired by a night at Berlin’s Griessmühle, the track’s foundation rests on an electro drum pattern, providing a mechanical backdrop as a synth stab rises ominously into the foreground.

With no 4/4 kick in sight, an overdriven breakbeat arrives two minutes in, launching the tune into the stratosphere leaving the listener in a dizzying headspin with an aftertaste similar to Shed or Photek.
