DJ Fresh - Guest Mix for Mistajam's Radio 1Xtra Show - August 2013

We've been holding on to this one for a while, yet to be honest, we're kind of glad that we have. With a month off in the summer, we're happy to spring back to life with a mix from the supremely talented Kush Arora in the shape of Wild City #061.

A San Francisco based producer, DJ and purveyor of cultural bass music, Arora has extensive music knowledge. Right through from metal, punk, goth, bhangra and industrial to what he's now more known for; tropical and global bass music. We're talking all shades of dub, garage, dancehall, funky and Indo-Caribbean influences, which form his unique and self-titled “dread bass” sound that has found him compared to producers such as The Bug, Stereotyp and even Adrian Sherwood.

A member of Surya Dub, a San Francisco based clubnight, awarded Best Club Night by SF Weekly for two consecutive years (2007- 2008), Kush consistently finds himself on the road representing the Surya Dub Crew and opening for the likes of Flying Lotus, The Bug, Bassnectar and Thievery Corporation.

His tracks have also been remixed by the likes of Eskmo and Rogue State as well as catching the attention of Pitchfork Mag, who referred to him as a “laptop musician extraordinaire”. Need we say more?

Wild City #061 steams through a solid 30 tracks in under 60 minutes. I think it's fair to say that we knew we were on to something when we saw the tracklist.

Excitingly he's crafted a mix that not only focuses on some of his own work, but also contains unreleased dubs. Listening to the mix, there's a remarkable consistency to Arora's production, an off-kilter rhythmic sensibility that ties the various tracks together. At the same time, there's diversity to it all. He's even been kind enough to make a two part mix, "for the club" and as he puts it "fuck time and slow wine". He's proved here that he's more than capable of assembling a brooding cut as much as he is a hands-in-the-air anthem or even songs to have raunchy, turnt up sex to. In short, the guy is talented.

But we'll leave that for you to figure out. Enjoy!

"Thought I'd round up some of the great new sounds I've been feeling, and after looking at the site, maybe some things that maybe haven't been featured to give you something fresh. The first half hits it "From The Club"; From Azonto and Kuduro to Angola, Ghana and Nigeria, all the way to Bay Area house music and some of my favorite tunes from London, plus a few bits from my catalogue with Zuzuka Poderosa (Brazil) and Silver Bullit (London, Ghana). This should have you doing the fucking 6:30.

The Second half continues the sexual journey with a special remix I did of Gyptian's "Slow Wine" that will be dropping later this year on VP records. It explores the Zouk Bass and Tarraxinha phenomenon from Angola and surrounding areas, plus a few dancehall joints I seem to keep coming back to." - Kush Arora

Garrett David and Adam Rowe first met 4 years ago working together in the run-down offices of Dust Traxx. Since then they have graduated to roommates and co-workers at Chicago's Gramaphone Records. With their debut release, the Boys deliver a unique and endearing house sound with a bit of quirk and machine-made flavor. An EP for the selectors, each track demands it's own place within the night. B Free features their dear friend and vocalist, Shaun J Wright (ex. Hercules & Love Affair).

We have been waiting so long to get this out, and cannot wait to share it with the world. Werk.

Here is Modern Amusement Podcast 03...I was enjoying a caipirinha in my hotel room on my last night in Sao Paulo this weekend, when I heard a rapid metallic knock at the door…   Thinking it was an errant room service, when I opened the door and saw nothing I was shocked…

Until I heard a series of bleeps and tones and a shiver coming from the ground and looked down.  I was surprised to see b6 the backwards motion robot again.  He was shivering and cold to the touch and his outstretched claw held a disc labeled “Lee Foss – Modern Amusement Podcast 03”   below was a a message from a future me that this was a recording of an old school house set from the early 2000's played at the 2088 Neptune Ball.  While excited to see more evidence that in the future both time travel and planetary colonies are possible I was disappointed that once again there was no tracklisting on the disc.

Made up of Hootie Who & Kazabon, the duo have been pushing the dancehall-soca-rap-afrobeats sound for years, with their longstanding clubnight and mixes. They were also responsible for these edits of our Douster release last year. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the aforementioned genres, it felt right to ask them to dig in deep to one of the most exciting sounds to blow up in London lately: Afrobeats.

Hootie Who describes how they were inspired for their Mixpak FM mix:

“Ever since Kazabon and I started the HDD club night we wanted to explore our respective heritages and its musical output. Kazabon’s heritage is Ireland by way of Trinidad which helps explain her voracious appetite for Soca. I am from Nigeria but born and raised in the west. It’s funny because until recently Naija music reflected Trinidad’s Soca season in the sense that artists tried to release music around a specific time of year (Christmas). The day after Christmas is Calabar Carnival, the carnival is still in its infancy but it’s already Africa’s largest street party. That carnival experience heavily influenced this mix. From the floats pumping out the biggest Afropop songs of the moment, to the Channel O/ MTV Africa after parties where South African house reigns supreme to the packed clubs where people try out the latest dance craze. It’s all here in this mix that captures the sound of the past few years. This mix can’t do that experience the justice it deserves especially the feeling of connecting with your homeland but we did our best. Trust me you haven’t lived until you have seen someone on roller skates azonto in the middle of the blazing hot summer.”

Ali Love’s prolific career has witnessed him produce two artist albums; several hit singles, and provided the vocals on hits by The Chemical Brothers, Justice, M Craft and Hot Natured. Luca C, formally of Luca C &amp; Brigante fame, has been producing music under various guises and in various band for years and has recently co-written and produced a track on Jamie Jones’s latest album.
