Andrew Smith aka Jasen Loveland aka infinity was the embodiment of the spirit of No Way Back and Return to the Source, his energy, his neon colors, his front and center nature was such a core element of these parties. In 2019 he showed up to the party with a shirt he ordered off the internet that was a collage of all these pictures he had done of the Interdimensional Transmissions logo, it was so over the top, no one could stop talking about it. The statement was so clear, he was here, and he was all about this. During the night almost every DJ played some of his music, I remember Derek Plaslaiko playing 5 of his songs that night. He was floating on air, I bumped into him on the dance floor and he was just glowing. It was like he was having a private concert of his own music with a few thousand friends. It was pure magic. 

He became a part of these parties, creating art for them. During the streams and after I had lost my father, he made sure to call me all the time and check in. That really meant so much to me. We’d have long incredible discussions, sometimes very spiritual. When the first streaming No Way Back happened at the beginning of lockdown, he made these over the top animations for us of the shirts and products we were making. They were a hit in the stream and some are still on our instagram. 

When we lost him only days before the 2021 stream, it was too much to process. Anger, sadness and just that incredible loss of a true head and magic spirit. So we broadcast this set he had recorded for Miguel Senquiz only a week before, and had Andrew Charles Edman process the video. A patch he created for Touch Designer was used for his and many videos in the No Way Back Streaming From Beyond 2021 broadcast. He was and always will be an integral part of what we do, and here we remember him with this video and mix, and have dedicated all of Return to the Source 2022 to him. Forever Jase.

Perhaps best known for his association with beloved dance music blog Truants, @riccardovillella is also one of our favorite DJs—with a streak of mixes that always feel like instant classics—and a staple of the broader dance music scene in his own right. Villella's penchant for community began on early dance music forums and extends into today's social media networks and elevating others through mixes and in-depth interviews on @truants. His mix for us, inspired by timeless mix CDs like those of Fabric and a 'spiritual successor' to his mix for our friends at @sure_thing, is also a vivid memory of teenage bike rides along the beach in 2006.

"For the last 11 years I’d been living in London and for a long time, I had no desire really to leave. People say you can call somewhere 'home' after living there for a duration of seven years, so I was well past and on my way. The last three years though, I had really burnt out quite hard creatively, and was kind of just trudging along. It took me a while to realize that I’d maybe needed a break away from London and the constant living for the weekend parties. Work had gone remote, so the option of moving back home to Brighton on the seafront for a temporary reset and to save some money seemed like the logical next step.

I was quite excited about moving back, as one of my friends Bobby had moved back home from London a year prior to also work remote, my friend Sean was still down there and had been making some really cool art recently so we’d been reconnecting, and my friend Sam who moved to Australia 10 years ago was going to be back for a short trip in Brighton this year for a couple weeks. This felt kind of important to me as, as we’d all be in the same city for the first time in a very long time, and these were people that made up my favourite summer ever - the year 10 one in 2006.

... We spent most of that summer going on these really long bike rides from Shoreham-by-Sea, past the cement factory before reaching Brighton beach, and just cycle as far as we could until the sun went down. Me and Bobby would pack our little MP3 players (think I had a Creative Zen Touch then) the night before with as much ‘feels’ music as we’d like to call it, anything that would make our cycles feel like an extended Michael Mann movie, or "LA Action" we’d say. There was just something quite life-affirming as a 16 year old, headphones in, cycling back as the sun sets after exploring some beach cave and you’ve got either of Fila Brazillia - "Subtle Body", Groove Armada - "Paris", or DJ Shadow - "Blood On The Motorway" playing in the background. It was all very Stand By Me in the most musically liberating way possible. I’ve caught myself thinking of those times a lot lately.

I’ve tried to channel a lot of those feelings quite subtly into my studio mixes over the years—hopeless nostalgia, bittersweetness, a sad euphoria—more so on ones where I’m trying to achieve something other than a club-mix. The Sure Thing mix comes to mind especially, but that was also very influenced by the techno aspect of the series and certain life events. Whilst this feels very much like a spiritual successor to that mix, I didn’t want to be so subtle with this one. It’s a straight ode to a single perfect 24 hours that summer, and all the tunes that I was listening to back then, plus some that capture that perfect world-at-your-feet, carefree, teen vibe for me. It covers many moods and feelings of a hot day down at the beach and the transition as the sun sets and you’re getting ready to dance the night away.

I’ve wanted to record something like this for a long time, something that kind of felt like a timeless mix CD, and think you gave me the best opportunity and timing in wanting to put it together, especially as I’ve been doing that same cycle route every other weekend whilst down here."

With what was mostly a full and fruitful year for us with many beautiful moments, we now turn our eyes forward to what is looking to be a very exciting year for us at Phonica as we walk into our 20th year of being alive. 2022 saw our mix series get even more killer contributions from artists like Paramida, Sally C, Fred P, Eden Burns, Alex Kassian, Erol Alkan and more. 2023's series line up plans to keep moving up and we have opened this years mix season in the capable hands of two of the finest DJ/Producers doing it right now. Bringing nothing but powerful, euphoric and goddess energies it can only be Octo Octa and Eris Drew of T4T Luv NRG. Amazingly celebrated for their strand of psychedelic, rolling progressive, trancey-house and break rhythms we can't think of two better selector's to take on our series. With an excellently curated compilation and mix for our good friends at Fabric last year as well as two banging cassettes on T4T we can't begin to imagine what this year has in-store for Maya and Eris but we have no doubt it's even more on the upward trajectory! Most likely to the heavens and back! We had a chat with Maya and Eris to see what they have been up to lately and little about how they approached the mix.

Disclaimer: This is a live recording! If there was ever a thought in the world to what I would sound like playing to a room full of ppl who have been outside drinking all weekend on one of the best rooms in New York City and possibly the world, then this could be it. Lack of sleep partly a factor on my part but fully leaning into that aspect. Vibe and energy over technicality and definitely precision. Not something you’ll be able to listen through very long sitting down or at a desk. Borderline unlistenable is most situations but highly entertaining and never boring by all objective accounts. Posting this not only requires a disclaimer but also an apology in advance to any disruption this most likely will incur to your current mind state. I was trying to sell some records before I moved and thought I’d go through some of the house records on my shelves that I wasn’t super familiar with. This mix was the result… safe to say i didn’t sell any of these records! 

PS: I recorded this mix a few months ago and went back just recently to figure out the tracklist.. most of them I remembered pretty easily, a few took some deeper digging through the record shelf, and there’s one track that, as of this mix being released, I cannot ID! In February 2023 I focused on developing a new live set for my debut with @thebunkerny for an album release, named one of the best releases of 2023 by @mixmag-1. I trained the set with performances at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Perfect Party Look Book and at Forest City Lodge with Microtones in Ithaca.

Maybe describing this can help you process some live set ideas.

My previous approach to delivering this material live (originally at The Long Count Cycle, then at Technically Yeah) was using stems as a bedrock and improvisation on top. Even though this worked fine, it got a bit stale for me and I wanted to be as satisfied as a listener when a groove sets in. So I decided to go fully based on MIDI information and instruments, with an added challenge that my CPU can’t take too much of a load, so I needed to make sure I disabled certain instruments before bringing others in. A disclaimer is that I am not fully endorsing all of the equipment in this list, there are some caveats that I’m happy to discuss.

In Ableton I created custom instruments through stock plugins like operator, collision, wavetable - these instruments are divided into ones I cycle through and ones that are constant throughout the set.

The constant ones exist in instrument racks and are freely interchangeable through chains - all of the parameters are mapped to the same knobs on my Novation Launch Control XL enabling me to wash through several instruments running varying sounds. I also have stored macro variations for those instruments in case I need some sound immediately without menu diving (like 1/16 note hi hats).

The cycled instruments instruments are mostly from my tracks in Amphibious / Aural Spirits that are all controlled by four channels on my Xone K1. Initially I tried using Tip by K-Devices and Map-8 to disable a swath of devices (thanks One Child Policy for the tip!). Yet I found that the CPU load was comparable with just leaving the devices on and simply stopping clips. This made for a much better workflow.

I slowly progress through the cycled instruments while improvising with the constant instruments and the main drums / accenting discussed below.

My iPad is running Werkbench by Karl Scholz @karlalamusic, a sequencer sampler app that can easily form interesting polyrhythms and is great for anything sample-related, like live accenting, bass lines, drums, etc.

For the main drums I didn’t want to be too focused on sequencing as it takes up a lot of time, so I just wanted to scroll through patterns that I generate beforehand. I opted to use a modified version of Instant Haus by @alexkid which stores drum patterns for four-five instruments. Modifying this was a bit challenging as it is difficult to determine what kind of patterns I think can stay interesting over an hour time period. This is playing Smackos 808 Simulator by @legowelt-official as well as other custom drum instruments.

For acid lines I am using a Roland TB03 on lend from Indy Nyles and sequencing the 303 with Sting by Iftah Gabbai  as well as his Microtuner device coupled with note echos (I believe this is the most CPU intensive part of the set).I am using Ableton Push as a means to do miscellaneous control and Jaw Harp / Mic for some added organic-ness.

I am running all of this through an Apollo Twin Duo and Allen & Heath Xone 96 at the club.

It’s been a while since I’ve put up a live DJ set. It’s also been a while since I’ve played a mostly electro set. Thought I’d take this opportunity at The Great Beyond this year to record a sunrise set driven by some of my favorite melodic electro tunes ever. Many which I’ve been playing for 20+ years.

For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music.

Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest.

Sometime after dawn, in my favorite warehouse in Detroit – the Tangent – I got to play my favorite party filled with all my favorite DJs – No Way Back. It felt like the time for the party to take a deep breath and refill its lungs. Playing directly after Patrick Russell and right before Erika, I took the moment to give the party what I felt it needed. First, rays of light, and then expansions and contractions in the sound. 

For the technique, I played on a Model One mixer with a Moog MF Delay pedal and 4 CDJs. Much of the music is upcoming on Interdimensional Transmissions, or things I have recorded in and remastered for DJing, especially to be played on the giant Jim Gibbons rig in this room, a process I call “quick masters” or “QM” for short. Some are very rare, some have never been playable in this context, or lost gems by my heroes, like CH BB. Some are new jams being played for the first time, like “Another Planet” where I jammed with Neel in his studio in Rome this spring on my 608 (modified 606) and 303. My favorite approach to NWB is to compose new music for it and test it there, it is such a special room.

DJ Yazi has been active since the mid-1990s,  as a member of Tokyo’s notoriously avant-garde hip hop group called Think Tank. The record label Black Smoker Records founded by the group took their experimentalism to a series of club nights called El Nino, and DJ Yazi remains its resident for two decades. Drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the intensity of dub and jazz, the ferocity of techno and the euphoria of house. As a DJ he moves fluidly across styles, with his sets connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves. His attention to details, precision and masterful control over the decks clearly show his long time involvement in this art form. He also performs with Haruka as Twin Peaks, an improvisational live/ DJ hybrid act. He currently hosts a regular techno/ industrial themed night called Konvektion at Contact, Tokyo together with Takaaki Itoh. After appearing in a Tokyo satellite event series New Assembly presented by Berlin Atonal in early 2017, he caught the attention of the festival directors, and made his European debut in Berlin playing Herrensauna at Tresor and Berlin Atonal 2017.
