Thy Squid was formed in the halls of California State University Long Beach when guitarist/vocalist Matthew Hill met bassist/composer Daniel Chavez. They bonded over a love of energetic and stimulating music, as well as a mutually shared classically trained background. Drummer/percussionist Kai Kaner brought his bombastic yet tasteful rhythms to the duo and the basis of Thy Squid was formed. Thy Squid has played countless sold out venues, bars, and clubs all throughout California, slowly building a loyal fan base. Highlights include the Echo in Los Angeles, the Viper Room in West Hollywood, the Prospector in Long Beach, and Winston’s in Ocean Beach, San Diego. Thy Squid went into the studio to record their first effort, Makeshift Weapons, with engineer Alex Granelli in the Fall of 2009. Three cuts: “Australia”, “Song in A”, and “WASP”, which have all become crowd favorites in the indie rock world of Los Angeles. Once again in the studio, Thy Squid collaborated with the Mars Volta’s award winning Isaiah “Ikey” Owens to complete their eponymous sophomore EP. With great reviews from publications such as OC Weekly, it is clear that there is nothing capable of stopping Thy Squid’s furious ascent.
