Continuing the vibe set in motion by number 003, and in a timely shift away from the elevated tempos of the club, Startree slows it down just a bit more for its fourth go-round, raising its sonic ceiling 
and lowering its floor.  The sensuous, broad-minded sound on offer here is the brainchild of one Mr. Eugene Tambourine, a name one can expect to be hearing a lot more from in coming months, given his 
distinct, energetic-yet-calming amalgam of musical delicacies, perfect for these shifting times.

“A Rising Sign“ somehow recalls salsa without using any drums, as it does house music without employing a kick.  Don’t ask how, just let it groove and try to figure out why your ass wants to move despite the absence of almost all of the hallmarks of today’s “dance music”.  All except for the outsize bassline which holds it all down firmly to the floor while playful electric piano chords punctuate and add
blocks of color to a an idyllic soundscape animated by cascading chimes, glockenspiel, bell, synth and zither.  This is a warm, sonic bath you’ll no doubt wish lasted longer.  

“Le Lagon Noir” began for Eugene as an instrumental rendition of Laurie Anderson’s “Blue Lagoon” but is, here, reincarnated in the form of a louche, mystical, serpentine groove which wouldn’t sound out of place at an aquatic rollerdisco.  Its lyrics have been revived, translated into French and voiced by the inimitable Camille Vourzay in her smoldering, dusky spoken tones.  Bright and mysterious synth textures wash the rich, mid-tempo jam in a lunar haze while pattering percussion adds earth to compliment the water.

“Keep my Light” beautifully reframes a lyrical reference to the pop-gospel standard “I’ll Keep my Light in my Window” within a deceptively empty-yet-full bed of softly-rendered drum machine 
programming and shimmering metallic textures.  Its wistful synth work hits that ever-elusive, melancholic 
magic spot between loneliness and abundant love.

Eugene's composition "Love Is On The One (No Rues It's True)" concludes the record, bringing the sentiment back home to where the heart is.  Yevhen Bubon's vocals lead this softly jubilant celebration of a bond between souls.  Using a palette which suggests both Logg and Larry Heard and lyrics which may provoke a tear, this is space-y, groove-laden music for both earthly and cosmic lovers alike.

Startree is delighted to present Eugene’s unique sound to the world as a continuing statement of its musical intentions and its simple desire to inspire and have a good time.

Back in 2019, Leng Records offered a debut to a previously unheralded producer, Takovoi. Three years on, the Russian nu-disco specialist returns to the label with a five-track EP that displays the depth and quality of his rapidly evolving trademark sound.

The Perfect Match EP delivers a range of grooves and stylistic approaches while showcasing the producer’s love of dreamy Balearic chords, soft-touch synth sounds and colourful melodies.

He sets the tone with the EP-opening title track, ‘Perfect Match’ where sustained, sun-down chords, yearning lead lines, cascading piano motifs and twinkling electronics ride a shuffling, post-electro beat and a warm, undulating bassline. ‘Homesickness’ sees Takovoi wrap waves of rising and falling synth sounds and melancholic melodies around a deep, hypnotic nu-disco groove, while the slow-motion sensation that is ‘Dreams’ brings throbbing analogue bass, sustained piano chords, sparkling electronics and the gentlest of beats.

Takovoi’s dancefloor credentials come to the fore with ‘Bubbles’, a slowly building Balearic nu-disco gem that layers up echo-laden percussion hits, eyes-closed melodies, and drowsy synth sounds over a bustling beat that sits somewhere between deep house and TR-808-driven broken beat. 

This off-kilter approach to beat programming continues on the EP’s inspired closing cut, ‘Another The Same’, where hazy female vocal samples, immersive chords and reverb-heavy musical motifs gingerly dance on a bouncy and densely layered 4/4 beat. When the main melody makes its presence felt midway through, the track is elevated to a whole new level altogether. It’s a fittingly impressive end to Takovoi’s new EP for Leng.

The Best Effort Show - Episode Twelve (Nadia Khan)

Paris based graphic designer & DJ Laurent - aka DJ Sundae - is a discerning selector with an eclectic taste. Whether delicate, liminal strains of ambient and folk, atypical forms of dub and post-punk or hallucinatory fixes of acid and interstitial electronics, there’s a unity and a careful sense of consideration to a Sundae mix that makes them a reliably rewarding listen.

A route to certain moods – ruminative or celebratory – and a constant source of discovery. With roots in hip hop, scratch DJing and an early engagement with records via his local skate shop in Montpellier, Laurent has a long history of collecting music and channelling his inspirations. From formative years scouring for examples of early electronics, through familiarities with folk icons and melancholic outliers, to an important exposure to the first strides of rave and techno, Laurent has acquired an appreciation for a wide spectrum of sounds. 

Regular appearances on Cosmo Vitelli’s NTS show No Weapon Is Absolute, mixes for the likes of Left Alone, People & Places, Knekelhuis / Intergalactic FM and Red Light Radio, and cassettes on Perks & Mini and The Trilogy Tapes, have all demonstrated, in their own way, an eye for special and singular records, and a natural subtlety in bringing them together, whilst a particularly memorable highpoint came courtesy of ‘Sky Girl’, a compilation he co-curated alongside Julien Dechery for Efficient Space (a release we covered extensively here).

Alongside DJing and curating archival compilations, Laurent runs the label Idle Press, an operation with a refreshingly measured approach. What might be perceived as a sporadic release schedule, is on reflection, a welcome change of pace in a landscape of often manic activity and overload. Only release what you love, a sentiment that’s patently adhered to, judging by what’s emerged so far. Downtown disco curios by Pitch, an underrated outing by Ransom Note favourites Smagghe & Cross, ethno-stylized ‘proto-trance’ edits by Alexis Le-Tan, and the psychotropic slow burn and profound dimensions of Karamika / 3rd Wave member and Düsseldorf stalwart Gordon Pohl - under the new nom de plume V2A - have conveyed a disparate yet well-defined identity. 

Attuned to the gentle, the exceptional and the bizarre, Laurent’s myriad projects and mixes are always a compelling prospect to dive into. With this contribution to Ransom Note’s ‘Wednesday Alternative’ series, Laurent presents an up-tempo hour of music, steeped in an inconspicuous sense of prowess and a characteristic spirit of unpredictability.
