The wall got painted over and the room was absolutely empty. We couldn't resist making lots of noise in it. 

Why the rage? These actually contain shared experiences of betrayal.

<b>The Dream Garden</b>

When Augustus awoke, suddenly and with a glassy tinkling in his ears, it was so cold in his tiny room that he could see a fine sparkle of frost over everything. Next to him, lying on the bed, was a long, elegant crystal which shimmered from within. It was his last dream, frozen solid.

Wrapping his ragged blanket around his thin body, Augustus cradled the fragile, frigid fantasy and left his room. He felt sick with fear as he descended the steep, creaking staircase. His bare feet were painfully numb and he clenched his jaw to stop his teeth chattering.

He knelt for ages at the end of the garden, by the grey stone wall of the orphanage, rocking the glistening, faceted gem in his folded arms until the first beam of the rising sun fell gently upon it. As he watched, the crystal gradually lost its lustre, fading and shrivelling until Augustus was left holding the body of a large lizard with glowing skin and diamond eyes, which faded in the dawn light.

Fighting to hold back his tears, he laid the reptilian corpse on the cold earth at his side and scraped a hole in the vegetable patch with his pale, bare hands. He buried the body with the others and crept silently back to his bed, hoping a sad hope that he would dream no more, at least until it was warmer and they could find their own way to the garden.
