Operating out of Berlin, she's started making waves over the last few years thanks to dextrous mixes running the gamut from deep, mind-altering techno wares to further heavy-duty workout material, becoming a resident at New York's Basement along the way. Constantly blurring the lines between abstract-leaning, angular 4x4 on a post-industrial tip and breath-holding descents down claustrophobic environments, Beatrice dishes out a prime selection of equivocally brutal and subtle joints, tailored to keep the nastiest herd of ravers in check throughout. For our latest Bleep Mix instalment, Sandwell District come through with a hefty programming of dark rollers fulfilling that promise of reinvigorated purpose they mentioned before: “Having a good time”. And with a wealth of exclusive unheard material it’s hard to refute the mission statement. Dropping straight into the cavernous environs of an unreleased Regis side Frosty Jack’s, the selection rides a restrained line building tension through a number of Nastia Reigel tracks deployed with utmost precision before upping its stride with Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems and quickly landing first peak from The Wizard himself, with Jeff Mills' slamming ‘93 cut Step to Enchantment (Stringent). Taking in a track from their comrade Surgeon’s forthcoming album, as well as the simmering acid of their own tune Hidden, Sandwell District bring it back round full circle via two further unreleased reworks of heroes Meat Beat Manifesto providing a breakbeat singed rupture to close out the proceedings with the vocal snatches of MBM’s Helter Skelter summing it all up really: “It's in my brain now. This is it!”

Embracing the Idea of techno as a means of transcending our condition, both as conscious and subconscious beings, this series offers a platform for artists to express themselves with enhanced scope and purpose. For this second installment which will take place on 5 June, RYC invites a trio of musicians who’ve been pushing the envelope of techno and electronics to a broader extent. A name synonymous with bold dynamics and cutting-edge approach, London-based producer Jin Synth will take us on a mind-bending ride down her intricate rhythmic algebra and layers of hypnotic, otherworldly sonics. A jack-of-all-trades whose hybrid, unhindered vision for music has driven to all ends of the techno spectrum, the one and only DJ Pete will join us for a hectic parade of breaks-laden, bass-heavy weapons and dubbed-out tangents. Chief explorer of lushly textured folds and immersive cinematic arcs, dub techno maestro Magna Pia will take over the decks for one of those moments on the dance floor when functional innovation fuses with multi-sensory exaltation.

DJ Sodeyama’s been around since the 90s, a Tokyo-based whizz and DJ’s DJ, whose career has offered the type of sound many selectors would envy. It’s incredibly sharp, meandering along its intelligent thread in unexpected and high-minded ways. Since the early noughties he could add producer to his soubriquet too, flexing his minimal muscle with early releases, a steady stream of ensuing ventures further cementing his craft via Korean-based deep techno distributor Artscope, Dynamic Reflection, illegal alien, Daybreak and many more. He’s also explored adjacent genres and ventured into the world of house under his parallel alias The People In Fog. Pretty full plate, but the quality of his sound has suffered nothing for it. His techno is an expert tapestry of interlaced details and lingering moods, injected with raw feeling and undeniable skill. It darts from peak to peak, fusing frequencies riddled with forward-pitched elements and vivid effects, and forges a long-range feeling that abuts the realm of both man and machine. Thick and volatile techno that serves as proof that the genre can keep expanding outwards in fresh and surprising ways. Bassiani Podcast 260 moves the needle further, it's quintessential Sodeyama: vivid climbs and steep descents, warped vocal samples, brave and unbending beats for prime-time raving.

“The hardware world is like a sport.” The DJ and producer talks about mastering synthesis and finding community in a male-dominated music ecosystem. 

Is talent innate? Today's guest, producer and modular synth extraordinaire Sibel Koçer (AKA JakoJako) doesn't think so. She's seen an extraordinary rise in her career in the last few years, earning a residency at Berghain, releasing on Mute Records, playing live shows at festivals around the world and becoming an in-demand remixer and collaborator for artists from the worlds of classical music, techno and pop. But she doesn't think she got where she is because of some God-given gift; instead, she says, her success is the result of tireless hard work. 

Many years ago, when Koçer moved to Berlin to finish nursing school, she spent slow periods in her job poring over modular synth manuals. She eventually abandoned nursing and instead chose to pursue an internship at the popular Berlin synth shop SchneidersLaden, where she started learning the ins and outs of building her own system and making her first connections in the modular synth world. In this Exchange, she talks about the specific dynamics of the producer community that loves and uses hardware—which she describes as competitive and "sports-like"—as well as being a woman in this environment, finding creative inspiration from synth manuals and channeling her energy into mastering synthesis when she felt she had no other choice.

Koçer is curating a compilation called Hardwired for the label Air Texture, which will be out on July 11th. It showcases music from the community of hardware enthusiasts and people who have an appreciation for machine-based music, including Rodhad, The Field, Acid Pauli and more. Charlton delivered a fully improvised performance using his modular system and a Roland TR-505. Harsh distortion, broken rhythms and high-impact energy defined the set — rooted in the raw, uncompromising techno tradition he’s been shaping for years.
