Tris(te)tan-esque

A Verdure is a type of tapestry decorated with a design based on plant forms and woodlands. It is also called Garden Tapestry. This short orchestral work presents the musical impressions and representations of the shapes, textures, modulating colors and moods from the designs in these tapestries.

Conrado "Titus" del Rosario was born in Angeles City, Pampanga. He won a scholarship to study composition, conducting and flute at the University of the Philippines College of Music with Lucio San Pedro, Francisco Feliciano, Ramon Santos, Eric Barcelo and Sonny Yangco. He worked as a professional musician , composer and arranger for studio and film in Manila as well as teach Music Theory at the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music. He won 3rd prize in solo instrument category (flute) in the National Competitions for Young Artists.He conducted the Young Artists' Chamber Orchestra and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

In 1982 he won the first prize in the League of Filipino Composers Chamber Music Composition Competition with his String Quartet No.1 and received a Young Artists of the Philippines Foundation Scholarship for further studies at the Berlin Hochschule der Kuenste (now Berlin University of the Arts) where he studied composition with Isang Yun and Witold Szalonek. He won the 1985 Hambacher International Composition Competition Prize. 2nd prize at the 1988 Hitzacker International Composition Competition. He also won Work-Scholarships from the Berlin Cultural Senate in 1988, 1991 , 1992 and 1997 which provided funds to create a composition and have it performed. His chamber music piece "pine whispers“ was chosen as one of the four finalists in the 1995 IRINO International Composition Competition in Japan. He was invited for a Concert-Lecture tour in the 1997 Pacific Music Festival in Canada. In 1998 he was the Berlin representative for a half year Working-Scholarship at the Cite International des Arts in Paris, France.

His comprehensive list of works include works for orchestra, chamber music, pieces for improvising ensembles, electronic music, music for radio and a chamber opera. Performances and broadcasts of his chamber music and opera in different European, Asian and American cities and festivals.

Conrado del Rosario taught piano and composition privately and was a Instructor in Piano and Improvisation at the Berlin-Charlottenburg Musikschule as well as the Piano Instructor in the Show and Musical Department of his alma mater, the Berlin University of the Arts.

He was a member of the Gamelan-Ensemble, Banjar Gruppe Berlin. In 1989 he founded B I C E -The Berlin Improvising Composers Ensemble and has performed with with this group in various european and american cities. Since 2007 he has returned to forming, playing and writing for Berlin jazz groups like Understatement, The BeCool Jazz Quartet, Sowat von Funk and OhrJazzMus. In November 2013 he returned to his hometown, Angeles City, Pampanga and founded KAPAMU (Kapampangan Musicians’) Jazz Collective and built the Jazz Grill, founded the bamboo instrument ensemble SUNLAG. He was in the Philippine delegation of composers in the 2017 China Asean Music Festival in Nanning. Guest speaker and performer at the Maceda100 Symposium. Conrado del Rosario was the 2017 Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awardee in the field of Arts and received the 2018 Pupul ning Banua Award for Music. He was nominated as Aliw Award Best Solo Instrumentalist in 2018. He will continue his various musical activities in his country.

Derived from the root word “lugar” (Filipino/Spanish: “place”), “kinalugaran” [kee-nah-loo-gah- RAN] refers to the site or place where a thing is set in position, a place where someone placed an object. A common context surrounding this word implies that one should know their place in society, reflecting the emphasis on social harmony prevalent among many Asian communities. As a result of this consciousness, peoples are marginalized by way of being othered and rendered invisible, as the loudest assertive voices among “Western” first-world societies are most heard and valued.

Kinalugarán highlights this condition at the forefront. An audio essay mimics a documentary that features the voices of Filipino artists based in first-world diasporic communities: violinist Ramon Alfonso “Chino” Soberano in Tempe, Arizona, United States; film composer Marie-Luise Calvero in Freiburg, Germany; and theatre creator Riley Palanca in Montreal, Canada. An ensemble of flutes and percussion plays live music over the audio essay as the three artists narrate their recorded perspectives and lived experiences surrounding invisibility, assimilation/integration, and homelands over soundscapes of found objects and musical instruments. Flute quotations from Filipino composer Jose Maceda’s work “Suling-suling” (10 flutes, 10 bamboo buzzers, 10 gongs; 1985) mesh with recordings of Jayson Palolan (“Idaw,” “Dayaw”) on Philippine indigenous instruments. Manifesting overlapping multiplicities surrounding experiences of invisibility, Kinalugarán bears the form of a modular work where both audio essay and flute ensemble music can exist either independently from each other or simultaneously on top of each other.

Kinalugarán is the third installment of a series of musical works that reflects on idealizing while also disentangling oneself from one’s place of origin. While detachments from homelands happen in complex layers of uprooting and unraveling, memories need not undergo processes of distillation or deconstruction in order to weave new normalities or subjectivities.
