|| OL SELECTORS - PAPA LU ||

In this week’s installment of OL Selectors, we welcome Papa Lu. 

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Papa Lu was exposed to a vast and diverse selection of underground music which he gladly absorbed at a young age. Finding himself instantly drawn to a thriving Hip Hop scene at the time, he dove right into the business of throwing parties, working with classic artists of the true school era like Digable Planets, Digital Underground, Gang Starr, Kool Keith, and many more. During that time, several house music pioneers like Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, etc. were making waves at the same venues he was holding his hip hop shows. From that exposure, he made a quick transition into producing house music events like his Night Moves party at Monarch SF. 
His love for music and natural talent for booking events rapidly developed into an exciting career of discovering new artists and bringing new sounds and talent to the Bay Area through his parties. He also collaborated with a group of close friends to create the Kazbah, one of the most popular sound camps at Burningman, and worked to rapidly gain a mass following through his signature sound known throughout Black Rock City and beyond.

Our 21st outing is brought to us by Auckland DJ and scenester Oliver Harris. Oliver has been entrenched in the dance music scene since the early 90s, finding his love of the doof in the legendary (although terribly named) CLUB UK in London, where he was lucky enough to enjoy Friday night residencies from Laurent Garnier and the late great Andrew Weatherall.

Purchasing a pair of trusty 1210s at university, and taking influences from the likes of the Global Underground crew, Ralph Lawson and Huggy, an epic music collection began to build. He started DJ'ing at house parties, and gigs on Koh Phagnan in Thailand and at the iconic Burning Man festival in the USA followed. 

Now Auckland based, Oliver's authentic taste has been noticed and he's popping up at all the parties that matter. He caught LO-FI's Attention with his excellent ambient/downbeat mix FROM LOCKDOWN WITH LOVE ... and it was from this we asked him if he could put together a mix for us here at LO-FI.

Here is the result, a true journey and walk through styles and tempos, starting with some ambience, moving through the etherial and emotive, and arriving at a crescendo of progressive goodness with a nod to the classic house sounds of yesteryear. Oliver makes no secret of his love of legends SASHA and DIGWEED and their influences are all over this mix.

Alongside his trademark sound, Till von Sein exudes an aura of noble grandeur mixed with the genuine enthusiasm of a child with a favourite toy when he's busy in the DJ booth. But  Tilly’s toy, which in this case is house and its countless derivatives, won’t ever end up forgotten in the corner. Long after the wrapping paper has been thrown away, what Till loves has yet to lose its magic. For von Sein, the sound of an 808 clap triggers a state of ecstasy, which in his hands emerges as pure euphoria on the dance floor. Time and again, his thumping transitions and heart-racing sets send listeners into overdrive, revealing the very core of house, soul and techno, while hitting on just what makes these genres so exciting.

Despite his intimate knowledge of the industry, which might allow him to slip easily into a been-there-done-that attitude, Till von Sein shows non-stop enthusiasm. For the last ten years, he has run the internationally active Clique Bookings at the side of Claudia Marquardt. More recently, his work as a producer has grown to encompass a vast catalogue of releases on labels such as Suol, Dirt Crew and Supplement Facts. He has collaborated with artists such as Tigerskin, Aera, Chopstick and Catz’n’Dogz, and his DJ work has long been a fixture in the international club scene. After his 2011 solo album "#LTD" (Suol), von Sein enjoyed a fully booked calendar and successful tour through South Africa, Japan, USA and Europe. He continues to ride a wave of success. In 2013, he released his personal contribution to the Suol Mates mix series, and further EP releases are in the works. Upcoming projects for 2014 include a new solo album and a project with producer and friend Tigerskin.
