On Fridays, as the last work day of the week approaches 2100 hours,  the garbage and recycling chutes from arcologies around the world open, spilling any offerings of week from the upper levels to the lower levels. Orphans, drifters, miscreants, the augmented, illegals, the desperate, the unemployed, and sometimes the occasional adventurous upper level dweller will often await its opening eagerly. The junk heap begins to fill as this week's offerings of obsolete or broken technology, spoiled foodstuffs (and pristine offerings from earlier in the day), and the occasional body or firearm (from upper level gang violence) falls and tumbles out onto the depositing yard below.  

This is a wonderful bounty to be had for the destitute. While the nice automated deposit yards are usually controlled by bio-manufacturing or recycling corps, most of the ones where this ritual occurs are run by the local gangs, punks, or shadow societies. Safety standards at these gatherings are haphazard at best; there have been incidents that have occurred where some attendants were crushed by falling debris. The upper and lower level denizens usually have an understanding and respect the ritual as an cordial interchange. In a world of excess, sometimes convenience is a lot easier if everyone benefits. The "pit bosses" are also known for their fair and equitable treatment of all citizens of the lower levels. This gathering is known as "Funday" in the arcologies and hive cities in the North American Federated States. In South American Colonia (SAC), the locals call it "la misa", akin to the old Sunday religious gatherings that occurred in the early 21st century before religion was banned throughout the world.    

When the last of the refuse land in the junk heap and the garbage chutes close, the junk heap is secured by yard workers, inspected by the on-site safety manager, and sorted with help from some 1st gen HumanMashcine workers. Items are tagged and appraised accordingly.  Then, the local "priests" will come and give their blessings by saying a few incantations and related techno babble, giving thanks to the upper denizens for their generosity. The DJs and musicians will then start their set, cranking up the volume and pumping out some nice grooves from antique speakers and subwoofers. Thus begins the "Funday" festivities that will last until dawn. 

While the sorting and appraisal is occurring, the populace, eager to receive the offerings of the week, will approach the staging area of the deposit yard where pit workers will hand out a number of chits. Chits are used for the auctioning of the sorted goods. The number of chits are given are also dependent of your contribution towards lower level society. A slum-doc might be earn more chits, compared to a lower level enforcer.  

Once chits are handed out, the procession of the destitute will shuffle and dance in an orderly fashion towards the deposit yard. The sacred ritual of the dance, bound by tradition throughout the decades, is strictly adhered to. Individuals will patiently roam the deposit yard and place bids on items they value using their chits, similar to an open English auction. Food and drink vendors, subsidized by the pit bosses, will also offer their goods to the participants in return for chits that they can spend. Dancing, chanting, bidding, and general extolling of the generosity of upper level citizens reaches a fever pitch by midnight.

Procyon alveare, or hive raccoons commonly known, will often attend 'Funday' gatherings a few hours before midnight, preferring though to dance and observe from sidelines. Tonight on 'Wanderers of the Megacity: Funday Mass', we will be broadcasting live from Shikaakwa-Arco, taking a closer look at these nocturnal animals and their fascinating behavior that continues to surprise scientists.

Alex Barck is known for participating at as many parties as possible simultanously. Now he invites for the very first time in his career to his own and personal bash. To the island La Reunion in the Indian Ocean to be exact. That’s where he settled with his entire family for a whole year since last summer to complete his probably most ambitious work ever: His debut solo album. The fist guest to be received is Pete Josef from Bristol (one half of The White Lamp), who wrote the lyrics for “Re-Set” and lends his voice to it naturally. A voice that suits perfectly Barcks twisted but always highly accessible productions. As a DJ who lives for the dancefloor Barck comes up with a track that make your legs shake and - in the second part - your hands raise. To assign the talents of newcomer Hannes Fischer to do a remix is a clever move. The latest wunderkind of the Berlin techno/house scene has an impressive sensitiveness for nuances like only very few have nowadays. In his rework he squeezes the essence out of “Re- Set” and fills it rich in content into a flacon that spreads somehow the odor of lavender. Until the release of the album “Reunion” there will be further three 12″ coming out of the holiday residence Barck. Stay tuned! In the meantime there still will be DJing in selected locations, work for the project Prommer & Barck (a second album is in the making), A&R managing for Sonar Kollektiv and of course active support of Jazzanova.
