Mike Callander | Techno 100Vinyl Live | Tilt Shift Tuesday 24th Sept 2024

Mike started DJing in 2001, and since then has been recognised as one of Australia’s most diverse and yet consistent selectors. In 2008 Mike co-founded Haul Music and began releasing ambitious avant-garde techno productions, including a long-player “Antarctica” and subsequent remix album, from which his tracks found their way onto mix CDs such as Dave Seaman’s Renaissance Masters, and into the crates of various tastemakers, and surprisingly even onto morning television. 

In 2012, alongside accomplished sound designer Davide Carbone, Mike co-founded School of Synthesis, an educational facility that offers high-end hands-on training to music producers and DJs. His work at SOS led him to become an Ableton Certified Trainer, one of only 250 people in the world endorsed by the company to demonstrate their software. 

Since 2016 Mike expanded his educational focus to include sessional lecturing, mentoring and technology classes at The University of Melbourne’s Bachelor of Music in Interactive Composition, where he is currently completing his Masters Research into the bridge between Techno DJing and studio practice.  

In 2016 and 2017 Mike’s production skills took him across Australia and the world for more than 30 shows with The Avalanches. This chart-topping Australian band is one of many to engage Mike’s live-show programming skills to take their project from the studio onto stages such as Glastonbury, Roskilde, Rock Werchter, BBK Live and Fuji Rock. More recently his work with the band has expanded to include production work on tracks for their third album.

Today Mike is more inspired for DJing and live performance than ever, but has an additional focus: Zero Percent, the production team he formed with Kim Moyes (of The Presets) and their record label Here To Hell. Zero Percent has thus far turned out genre-smashing remixes for The Drones, The Avalanches and The Jezabels, and is fast developing a reputation for sweaty, energetic performances at their Here To Hell label nights.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

I grew up on the Surf Coast of Victoria. A bunch of older kids in high school started venturing up to Melbourne to frequent the world renowned & vibrant rave scene happening across the city. Parties like Hardware, Every Picture Tells A Story, War Of The Worlds and Two Tribes were happening every other weekend and It was an incredible time for the scene. It wasn't long before we started to hold small raves and parties of our own on the outskirts of Torquay.

I was completely hooked on the rave & DJ culture. I would listen to and study the likes of Ben Sims, Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills mixes from clubs like Fuse and The Liquid Room, learning their mixing techniques and tricks but It was Carl Cox' early FACT Cd's that got me hooked on techno, acid and trance.

After years of renting equipment, I finally saved enough to buy my own turntables. I'd regularly catch the train to Hardware Records in Prahran to buy vinyl, and the journey back to Torquay reading each record label remains one of my fondest memories.

In 2005 I moved to Melbourne and began DJ'ing weekly at venues like Lounge, Eurotrash, 161, Fokus, 2 Floors Up, Seven and Revolver. A move to Hobart in 2009 saw me expand my career as a promoter and festival organisation for nearly 15 years.

Now based on the Gold Coast pursuing my passions of music and building surfboards. Really looking forward to connecting and sharing music here on Soundcloud.

For almost 20 years, James Steer has consistently and unassumingly contributed to the after-hours soundtrack of Melbourne. Well respected within the underground Melbourne DJ community, James has built a reputation as a selector who deftly balances exquisite taste with technical execution. James cut his teeth as one of the founders of the legendary Deep Chord Melbourne parties in the early noughties, showcasing the emerging deep minimal sounds of the time to an eager and receptive audience. The party started off as an intimate affair in the confines of the upstairs space of Pony Bar (later Boney), before finding a true home in the legendary basement space of the Mercat Cross. Since then, James has regularly graced the decks at some of Melbourne’s most iconic nightspots, equally adept at delivering funk and disco laden suppertime soundtracks as heaving excursions into deep dance floor dynamics. Drawing from a vast, genre-defying collection, James’ sets offer the listener/dancer a guided tour through the fundamentals of depth, always evolving and never stagnant, a glimpse into the now, with a respectful nod to what’s come before.

In this time we have hosted & toured artists such as: Marvin & Guy, Curses, The Hacker, Tronic Youth & Timothy Clerkin
