The Blackout train has well and truly left the station already in 2017, and with the year’s debut single from Black Sun Empire featuring collaborations with Noisia and Pythius the momentum that is being gathered so early is bordering on frightening.

BSE have delivered another beautifully constructed single that blends the tough sound fans are used to with Noisia’s brains and Pythius’ brawn. The depth of knowledge and talent in tandem with BSE’s creative capacity makes the single just the adrenaline shot the scene needed to jump start the year. “The Veil” takes a more scaled back approach by pushing its energy through a souled out bassline, whilst Pythius’ influence can be heard in “Catalyst” as it swings violently, yet gracefully, through a string of hot tempered breaks.

The great news is that this is not just a single release, but the prologue to an epic journey that Black Sun Empire are to embark upon in 2017, with the group stating recently:
“we’re excited to announce we’ve been working on our next album and we’re almost finished, can’t wait to tell everyone more about it soon”
As a statement this is incredible news, as many fans and peers have been waiting for a BSE longplayer for a while. However, when you look at “The Veil”/”Catalyst” as the hors d’oeuvre and appetiser, the main course is guaranteed to attain Michelin star status.

Russian drum & bass outfit Triamer and Nagato hail from a place that likes drum & bass that cuts right through to the bone. Time after time they deliver only the nastiest of cuts, pushing aside any commercial appeal and creating the real authenticity which many drum & bass fans crave for. And this is what Triamer and Nagato certainly offer up for their next release, pushing forward three masterfully crafted, but blaringly aggressive tracks which will platform their sound to an even wider audience on French label Kosen Production.

‘Woogie’ comes first, featuring rolling beat patterns and distorted bass crackling throughout its intro. Slowly but surely the track breaks, with blasting kick drum and clattering percussion rushing across the mix. The record focuses heavily on the hook which drives between every break, creating a groove that’s impossible to pull yourself away from.

Dutch producer DJ Hidden is no stranger to the creative arts. A musician, DJ and art designer, he’s honed in on a multi-faceted skill set to produce his incredibly unique take on the drum & bass genre. As well as having a background in composing other dance music sub genres, he’s crafted a signature sound within the 174bpm world which is often described as haunting, dark and cinematic. With years of experience clocked up in the studio, creating, mixing and mastering tracks, it’s no surprise that Kosen Production enlisted his expert ability for their next release.

Alongside Toulouse based imprint Kosen Production, who has helped to set a standard for independent record labels throughout Europe, DJ Hidden delivers their next double sided single which further etches his place within the realms of electronic music. Founded in 2011, they’ve continued to push the boundaries for drum & basses underground and their next output provided for by DJ Hidden will help spearhead their sonic expansion into even deeper crevasses.

‘The Place That Did Not Exist’ signals that DJ Hidden’s brutal production standard has developed into something even fiercer. Laying the foundations for a cataclysmic drop, every spike of waif-like atmospherics creeps through the mix before disappearing into stabs of distorted bass. The track then gradually builds with quick drum successions, before a brief pause pulls you into the chaos. A cinematic sample leads you into a conundrum of smashing kick, with weighty subs lying beneath waiting to pounce with every figure of eight. Once the tune explodes on impact, it’s easy to see why Kosen brought DJ Hidden into their groundbreaking roster.

On the flipside, ‘The Angle’ takes you on a different journey, flowing between tinkering percussion and dreamy, female vocals speaking anonymously amongst slowly winding drum patterns. The record then suddenly cascades into a crunching bassline which weaves in and out of metallic kicks. It’s an incredibly divisive track, playing host to the range of influences DJ Hidden has extracted throughout the entirety of his career. Together producer and label help to widen the drum & bass soundscape, pushing contemporary production standards to yet another level.

some of the Forbidden Society cuts reworked by some masters within the genre. The release opens with a hypnotizing ''The Clamps'' remix of the label anthem ''Street Justice''. The staggering drums work great with the bassline and intrusive synth blips. The emotive ambiance hat is introduced throughout makes for a great alternation. Second up is signature snare-man ''Donny'' who delivers a banging reword of Forbidden Society's BWM. Hardcore Drum & Bass music at it's finest,  it's all about the drums in this one. South African duo ''Counterstrike'' come up with a remix for ''Sellout''. This is a peak time rework, placing the emphasis on top notch drum-breaks and some funked out elements that  should strike a chord with lovers of the label. Hallucinator are reworking the ever so dark ''NYC Punk''. This fast paced theme is pumped up a notch with great care for the original. Label regular ''Katharsys'' does an adventurous reword of 'Skullcrawler' which stands out in originality. The pack is finished by S9 who creates havoc with his tremendous ''Outlaw'' remix. Forbidden Society Recordings at it's best with an undeniable all-star line up.Watch out for the part.2!
