MOTE050 :: Planetary Assault Systems - Deep Heet Vol. 4

Since 2006, the Deep Heet series of recordings has shown the public an especially distinctive side of the production work of Planetary Assault Systems. With a unique ‘engine room’ ambience and a focus upon maintaining a continual surge of pure energy, each volume in the Deep Heet collection has lived up to that title, subtly suggesting the kind of sustained and voluntary temperature rise that has traditionally given way to spiritual or visionary experiences. Just check out tracks such as “Flat Tire” from Volume 3, with its hard percussive edge accompanied by a pervasive hiss like boiling matter changing into gas. P.A.S. helmsman Luke Slater also thinks highly enough of this series to re-work tracks like “Whistle Viper” in recent live sets, or to offer up others (e.g. “Raid”) for remixing by Mote-Evolver allies. 
It’s only appropriate, then, that the 50th overall release on Mote-Evolver should also be the fourth overall volume of Deep Heet. In keeping with Slater’s recent forward-thinking self-assessments like the “Planetary Funk” anniversary series, this is simultaneously a summary of past successes and another new evolution in style and content.  This new set of four highly concentrated cuts shows how effective Planetary Assault Systems can be at fueling the imagination by fusing together rhythmic and incidental elements into a unified, animated meshwork, without even a prominent melody to help out. For example, on the compelling track “Lazer Organical,” listeners will find themselves in the midst of a testing range where thick arcs of coherent plasma ricochet off of the walls. 

Deep Heet Vol. 4 also showcases Slater’s aptitude for choosing just the right moments to deviate from a steady groove: on the mesmerizing bubblebath of “Random Kingdom,” he allows listeners to sink into the rising sonic foam before interjecting with some sharp metallic hits. The leadoff track “Desert Races” proceeds in similar fashion, weaving a web of luminous sequencer patterns around the listener before and cutting in with sudden fluctuations or distortions that function like a hypnotist’s suggestions after an entranced patient has become fully responsive. “Life Rhythm,” on the other hand, is a total immersion session in which Slater’s presence seems to recede into the background and listeners themselves may begin imagining overtones and sonic ephemera that weren’t programmed into the original track.

When it was announced that Luke Slater was going to release his latest Planetary Assault Systems album on Ostgut Ton, it hardly came as a surprise. After all, he'd already given them an epic ambient cut for their Shut Up and Dance! Updated ballet soundtrack, and he's been a semi-regular fixture behind the decks at Berghain since late 2006. But even given his previous record for raw techno and acid as Planetary Assault Systems, it does seem as if Temporary Suspension is Luke Slater's "Berghain album"—a distillation of his adventures at the club, both in the DJ booth and whilst getting sweaty amongst the muscle marys and party animals. Even the introduction of the record draws direct comparisons to the Berghain experience, with the slow fade in to an already driving beat mirroring the walk up the first set of stairs to an already bulging dance floor.

For our money it's all about the Slater remix of 'The Outsider', laying down a dry-heaving banger in the finest Berghain/Sandwell/Dettmann style, and a must for anyone who picked up his awesome Ostgut album earlier this year. On the flip Ruskin's original version and 'Solution' come constructed in the sort of DJ friendly and typically synthline driven UK style favoured by Mark Broom or Surgeon. James Ruskin - The Outsider (Luke Slater's ME Remix)

Techno pioneer Luke Slater, AKA Planetary Assault Systems, honoured Stroboscopic Artefacts by taking SA003 on his latest tour of Asia. While still in Japan he was inspired to remould and rethink “Gmork” in the studio, giving the track his twisted hallmark. He takes the original elements of “Gmork” and weights them base-side-up. In his hands the track becomes more dizzying, disorientating and hypnotic than before. Luke Slater injects playful flourishes in the form of odd glassy sounds and off beat insertions. For anyone who has experienced one of his Berghain residency sets you will recognise the warped 9am atmosphere.

Having only a scant few releases to its name, L.B. Dub Corp, one of Luke Slater's lesser used guises, slinks in and out of the scene, dropping off quality EP's and remixes when you least expect it. Finding a new and appropriate home on Ostgut, the Take It Down (In Dub) EP has two spacey hitters. A slappy bass, a noise wash, and a growling kick are what kick off the title track, slowly giving way to a slightly pitched down vocal drop of "take it down." 

Not nearly as high in the BPM's as Slater's Planetary Assault System productions, "Take It Down" is a slyly warping beast. It has a pristine sludge to it that begs for an eyes-closed demonic shuffle, its brooding drone perfect for early hour madness. More than halfway through, though, the entire thing shifts to reveal a grimey, rinsed out synth that opens the entire 11+ minutes of the track up to a new feel and intensity. 

Where things really get interesting is on flipside "It's What You Feel." One of the most inviting basslines in a while partners with a steady synth pad for a cleverly produced house track. A steady groove paves the way for a classic piano line summoned from Chicago. This B-side monster is the perfect counterpart to the A, and makes this one of Slater's best efforts since his PAS EP on Ostgut last year.

Released on Slater’s iconic ‘Freek Funk’ album on NovaMute - one of the most seminal techno albums of the 90s - ‘Love’ finally gets the remix treatment it deserves more than two decades after its initial release.

Leading the charge, Burial makes one of his rare appearances on remix duties and doesn’t disappoint with an atmospheric and mesmerising reimagining with an aesthetic reminiscent of ‘Untrue’. Lucy then reels out a deep-diving techno roller with precision kicks and tantalising melodies. Luke Slater then adopts his The 7th Plain moniker for a collage of sound extending past the 15-minute mark, before upping the energy with a moody reverberating number as Planetary Assault Systems.

Marcel Dettmann provides two takes on ‘Love’; his ‘City’ remix features a cacophony of metallic rhythm, ebbing pads and plenty of swing whilst mantra-like vocals operate throughout, followed by the thudding ‘Black Glove’ remix with its murky tones and rattling effects. Cascading drums and lively trumpets is next in Silent Servant’s upbeat and infectious take, until Scuba concludes the release with a high-tempo cut fuelled by funk complete with an idyllic breakdown.

Coming end of November, Slater has also planned the very first reissue of his seminal techno album as Morganistic ‘Fluids Amniotic’ since its release in 1994. He released very limited cuts with this moniker but had a strong influence and has been supported by pioneers of the genre such as Jeff Mills or Robert Hood. The LP has been remastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis from the original DAT and reel-to-reel tapes.
