We are thrilled to share a stunning collection of remixes celebrating the heartfelt music of @murray-kyle! This album takes the soulful acoustic originals and bridges them into the electronic realm, where modern beats and textures bring a fresh, vibrant energy.

As part of this journey, we held an open call for remixes, inviting creatives worldwide to participate. From the many incredible submissions, four standout artists—@khazaaaar, @john-pattern-81229086, @unpumah, and @bloomurian—were selected for their unique and beautiful interpretations, each earning a $400 prize.

The result is an album we’re immensely proud of, blending deep emotion with contemporary soundscapes. We hope it resonates with you as deeply as it does with us. 🎶💖

It was in September 2016 that Basy Tropikalne began operating as a netlabel and the first release came in a form of a Latin American compilation. Following the success of that album – which was featured among others by Indie Hoy, Cassette Blog, Sounds and Colours and tropicalbass.com - now it is time for a second installment which brings as many as eighteen previously unreleased tracks by a mixture of already recognized and rising and promising producers from all over the continent.

This massive compilation starts with Cigarra who has been doing an amazing work promoting female producers from Latin America with her work as the manager of Hystereofônica platform. Her uplifting track is followed by extremely talented Di Laif from Guatamela who came up with a deep and ominous composition called ‘Ominous’. Next up are the wonderful minds of Rafa Caivano and Lisandro Sona for whom this may actually be the last song in a long time under the alias of Klik & Frik as their big comeback with the Frikstailers project is planned for the next month. Right after them there are two fellow Argentinians – Maich presents delicate ‘Verde’ with a Caribbean touch whereas Kaleema turns to Africa and focuses her production on field recordings from Kenya.

Another remix and at the same time the longest track on the release comes from Liman producer Renzo Zong who has tried his chances on ‘Niña Salvaje’ by Jorge Mestanza and María Cristina Simon and changed it into something more profound. Subsequent track belongs to Inti Kunza, Santiago de Chile underground legend and one of the La Chimba Discos founders who jumps in with the hypnotizing ‘Peuma’. ‘Balada de Aventurança’, in turn, is delivered by Brazil’s Projeto Mujique who once again proves his skills in mixing the guitar sounds with electronic music.

Moving on we bump into a magical moment of witnessing the first ever collaboration between some of Costa Rica’s finest artists: producer Nillo and vocalist Javier Arce who created a masterpiece titled ‘Lamento de Aïa’. Then we are treated with back-to-back tracks from Buenos Aires-based acts as hard-hitting Camanchaca duo’s ‘Seneca’ is followed by a decent song from Uruguay-born Xanducero (just listen to this wonderful drums in the second part of ‘Aguilucho en mi Ventana’…).

After that there is the fastest track on the whole album with Ecuador’s Ataw Allpa remixing last year’s ‘Candirú’, the effect of collaboration between himself and Brazilian DJ Nirso who also appears on ‘Basy Tropikalne # 2 (Latin America)’ just few tracks further into the release. Brazil is also where ElPeche hails from and his major contribution to the compilation was not only mastering it but also handing over his own composition called ‘Cuicwah’.

‘Daisukidesu’ is a work by Argentina-born Germany-based Kumbale Records founder Pocho who created a kind of cinematic cumbia song sampling anime – hence its Japanese title. Ore Rüb , the name of the next project, may sound mysterious but the producer behind it is no other than Andreh Torres, previously known as Nacho Libre. It is a great honor to present the debut track of his new alias in the Basy Tropikalne release.

Beautiful and melodic ‘Renjasé’ by Mr. Toé of Konn Recordings perfectly introduces the true gem that is hidden at the very end of the compilation. Colombia's Cerrero and El León Pardo once again reinterpreted one of the Afro-Colombian legendary groups to create a magnificent dub remix of a classic song.

Pleamar (Spanish for high tide) is the first collaborative release between Chancha Vía Circuito and El Búho for Wonderwheel Recordings, and stands as one of the most refreshing EP’s within the Latin American downtempo electronic genre. 

On this release the vision of both artists is united as one. This unity is reflected through “Real Fun, Wow!”’s artwork, presenting an image of a centered eye, reminiscent of historic drawings from tide studies. The representation of Earth, with a central circle surrounded by two ellipsoids that rotate and align in perfect harmony, mirrors the meeting of the two producers, the moment when the seawater reaches its apex and Pleamar occurs. 

Like a metamorphosis that - without knowing it - we had been waiting a long time for, the EP reconstructs Pedro and Robin’s encounters over the years. It transports us into the history of migrant sounds, the salvaged sound of floral jungles, high mountain forests and the ocean deep. We hear a sonic beauty filled out by deep personal stories - four humble and honest tracks that demonstrate the fusion of these artists and both them and the genre into new territory. 

Starting with “Oruga”’s deep ambience, dub atmospheres and space echo reverberations, the album follows this line of reverberated rhythms and relaxed percussion lines throughout, carrying us along with a pulsating, deep, natural tempo. “El Mago Georges”, perhaps the Pleamar’s jewel, is bursting with life - impactful depth and perfectly tuned melodies yet tribal and delicate at the same time. “Murga del Viento'' recalls another meeting of these two minds: El Búho’s much-loved remix of “Sueño en Paraguay” a beautiful track from Chancha Vía Circuito (“Amansará” 2014). Here the whistle meets the owl from the previous track and the two birds take us a step forward in this collaboration with chords superimposed on a haunting bass. The release ends with “Una Pulgada de Silencio”, a track of cosmic synthesizers, trickling water samples and the voice of argentine folk singer Gus Goncalves. Through Pleamar we come to find a much needed peace and clarity hidden beneath the rolling waves, a deep-sound escape to get lost in.

Chancha Vía Circuito & El Búho - Murga del Viento

Ground-breaking percussive ambient recordings to induce altered states of consciousness through ecstatic dance. Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors were a world unto themselves.

Despite featuring an extraordinary cast of musicians (with credits including Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis, Santana, Stevie Wonder, Milton Nascimento and much more) and selling hundreds of thousands of albums, the music of Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors remains largely unheard beyond their sphere. Conceived as live, improvised soundtracks to Roth’s transcendental dance workshops, musical acclaim was never on the agenda.

Instead, for a passionate dancer and spiritual polyglot like Gabrielle Roth, movement was a means through which to channel a wide spectrum of teaching, from experimental psychology to psychedelic counter-culture. It was from this heady mix that she devised a movement meditation known as 5Rhythms, which came to define her life’s work.

As “guide and catalyst”, Roth would dance to inspire the percussion-led instrumentals that would in turn fuel her 5Rhythms workshops, stimulating a secular form of ecstatic dance with roots in Native American shamanic traditions, Afro-Brazilian Candomblé and Yoruba drumming.

Using anything from a Sioux pony drum to East African kihembe and Japanese Kabuki drums, Gabrielle’s lawyer-turned-drummer husband Robert Ansell set the foundational rhythms for The Mirrors’ recordings, each of which would then feature a rotating cast of friends and professional musicians.

“The secret of everything we’ve done is that we never told anybody what to play,” Robert shares. “Instead of our albums being a musical vision of one person like me or Gabrielle, they were the musical vision of a whole bunch of people.”

At times the recordings have a Middle Eastern flair, at others, West African and spiritual jazz modes come to the fore. Hints of kosmische musik, proto-house and electronic ambience are laced like LSD through the organic rhythmic structures. This was kaleidoscopic ambient music to stir the body and free the mind.

In practice, the task of synthesising these different elements fell to Scott Ansell, Robert’s son and a recording engineer whose credits now include Nile Rogers, Duran Duran, Grace Jones. With meticulous attention to detail he captured and translated the dynamic energy of each drum onto record. Their sessions became legendary, and with access to the best studios in the NYC, The Mirrors sparkled.

Despite being initially overlooked by the burgeoning ‘80s New Age market, which preferred pipes and gongs to The Mirrors’ heavy-grooving drums, Robert Ansell set up Raven Recording to self-release the music, creating a vast sonic archive of sixteen albums over almost forty years.

The breadth of Raven’s catalogue is such that curator Pol Valls had to cut an initial selection of sixty-six tracks down to the eleven featured here. What crystallises is a stunning, mind-altering collection which spans, in Pol’s words, “a variety of genres, styles, and vibes within their catalogue, whether it is emotional, esoteric, spiritual, melancholic, hypnotic, dark, or at times a combination of these elements together.”

Music for immersive and intimate environments, Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors were born from the dance. In the hands of the right DJ, at the right time, in the right place, they might just return there.
