This is the recording of my DJ set at Berghain on sunday morning 6th of February 2011, between 8 and 12am. Deep respect to Stroboscopic Artefacts for having me as part of the line-up, the Berghain crew for being the perfect hosts and last but not least that massive pack of dancing nutters on the floor (especially the Belgian delegation present for the occasion). Peter Van Hoesen and Yves De Mey's joint project, Sendai, will release an exceptional new EP via Stroboscopic Artefacts' Monad Series on July 28.
These two producers, both highly acclaimed in their own right, have so far pulled together for releases on Peter's label Time to Express and Archives Intérieures, the experimental label they run together, as well as two tracks on a Stellate record for Stroboscopic Artefacts in 2012. The 18th edition of the Monad series finds them in fine form, exploring a rich and detailed sound with limitless freedom.
Opening track 'Isobaric 3' is thick with atmosphere, crammed with reverberating percussion and masterfully sculpted with 3-dimensional design. It is the kind of immersive, futuristic techno that Lucy's label is known for, fit to move both body and mind.
'False Entities', the EPs most abstract offering, combines machine hiss with unnerving bleeps and metallic perc. Sendai create rhythm out of nowhere with unique style, and take the Monad manifesto of boundary-pushing to new extremes.
In techno terms, 'Directive' is an epic. It remains throughly engaging for over 12 minutes with twists, turns and intricate layers of sound. Beginning and ending with washes of ambience, the middle section breaks down into a repeating, tight bass sound. This track is superbly realised, both in its balance of light and dark, and in its ambitious, cinematic arrangement.
The most obvious dancefloor cut is 'Martens' Deficit'. Its drums are more rigidly structured than the other tracks, and pump away below brights synths and an energised high-end. 'Martens' Deficit' is an incredible end to an EP that fully lives up to the high expectations that surround both its makers.

In the interview below Peter discusses forthcoming releases and what’s next for his label Time To Express. He also sheds light into his formative years growing up in Belgium and his collaborative project alongside Yves De Mey as Sendai.

Lancashire's sons of occult darkness push off into the night with the first in a triptych of spellbinding vinyl-only LP's. 'Forest Of Evil' is a direct elevation and expansion of the ideas expressed on the debut album, 'Symbiosis', literally breaking down multiple elements to run as two extended pices - one on each side, giving more scope to suck us into an abyssal vortex of inky blackness without interruption. The sides are themed as 'Dusk' and 'Dawn', entry and exit points for a trip where owt can happen in between. On the palindromic 'Dusk' tentative strings with one eye on Alice Coltrane imbue an astral sense of wonderment before plunging us head first into the cold water of elliptical percussion. With lungs and ears flooded we're churned in a current of Shackleton-esque percussion at the bottom of a tarn, high in the hills before returning to the coruscating strings on the surface. With 'Dawn' a battery of warlocks forge a martial tattoo, like Regis sent to the dark ages to live out his fantasies with a medieval drum circle. And then, out of nowhere, an ominous veil of layered strings emerges out of nothing to sweep us away with vintage elements and ghostly traces of sound last heard on the sublime last album from the Caretaker as quivering subbass tremors threaten to open the ground beneath the turntable. Approach this when under the influence of magic potions for maximum rewards...
