Embodying the mutant nature of club music in the modern age, Cocktail Party Effect comes bowling into Sneaker Social Club with a taut, wiry sound which joins dots and melts barriers at will. 

The brainchild of Charlie Baldwin, who previously recorded as Kasket, Cocktail Party Effect has been forged over the past six years through heavy bursts of sound design anchored by soundsystem dynamics veering between 140 and 160 tempo zones. From 2020’s self-titled LP on Tectonic to drops on Osiris, Cold, Transfigured Time and more, Baldwin’s deftly avoided allegiance to any specific scene and instead deployed shock-inducing gear for DJs with fortitude to test on their crowds. 

On SNKRX010 the commitment to physicality is prevalent across all four tracks, veering from the deadly broken beat barbs and artful fills of ‘Racka’ to the splintered breakbeat rushes and stop-start aggravation of ‘C.A.T.C.R’. ‘Grims8’ is perhaps the purest manifestation of the Cocktail Party sound though, all monochrome rigour with the contrast turned way up, powered by steely, gleaming rhythmic impulses and writhing with dense layers of sonic matter. Watch out for the glutinous bass snarl of ‘58bethe7’ though, which slams in sideways with an unabashed rave instinct crushed through a post-modern production lens. 

Baldwin may be operating on his own terms, but on this 12” he demonstrates versatility to match his originality, resulting in four inventive dance destroyers tooled to bridge between styles, sets and scenes.

“Dog Eared”! Named as such as it marks a turning point in my productions and releases. Made while moving from Bristol back to London this as a theme pops up throughout the EP.

“Ithaca Vox” is the name of my first ever favourite preset - a CMI-inspired pad from GarageBand which I’ve been using since I was 11 but never on a release. The track also samples the screeching of Victoria line on my way back from nights out.

“Bubble Trouble” caused many headaches to finish hence the addition of the word “Trouble”. The track pops, floats and bursts into the space between simplistic cartoon sound sources and excessively over the top sound design and production.

“Dive” dives further into these production ideas swapping tight space tiny bubbles for wide grinning resonance. The twisting track cuts these resonances leaving a large valley of missing frequencies that gets suddenly filled by an unrelentingly simple bell centring the listeners balance.

“From Window to Wall” gives a not so subtle nod to one of my favourite excessive chart hits as well as a further nod to the source of some of the track samples (see if you spot them).

“Calpohol” is the first collaboration Ive released (another reason to Dog Ear this release). Made from an afternoon of recording with Delay Grounds on his custom Eurorack the track was shaped by us over the weeks that followed.

Kyoto’s Naco returns to Scuffed Recordings for his third outing on the label, with four new tracks spanning esoteric and leftfield techno and breaks.

The journeys of Naco and Scuffed Recordings have been tied together since the earliest days of the label. His 2026 EP, released in 2018, was one of the first releases on the London imprint, with the release being championed by Skream among others, and the track OIZB appearing on the first ever Scuffed vinyl.

Returning to Scuffed in 2023 for the Noian EP, Naco received further support from the likes of SHERELLE, Moxie, Jamz Supernova, and Nikki Nair, with his ever-warping blend of techno, breaks, and oddball electronics.

On the Spride EP, Naco takes an altogether moodier approach compared to the all-out breaks of the Noian EP, bringing us four new heads-down club tracks that nevertheless retain Naco’s unconventional and off-the-wall approach to production.
