Disquiet Junto Project 0099: In the Key of X

2013 Disquiet Junto Pieces

Sound 1: Airplane landing
Sound 2: Me walking across my gravel driveway and getting in my car and shutting the door

I put a flnager on sound 1 and eq'd low and rolled off highs.
I eq'd sound 2 to be a bit more high heavy but still increased the low end.

I then bounced out the 2 tracks, once arranged and cut to the project's specifications, to a single WAV file.

I then took that wave fil and copied it to 3 individual tracks.
One track panned to the left and high heavy and affected with a spreader, one track panned right to be mid and high heavy and heavily affected with chorus and the third track I rolled off the highs and kept centered.

I then took an uptempo drum beat and side chain compressed each of the individual tracks to duck at separate hits from the beat. The track panned left ducks every time the snare hits, the track panned right ducks every time the high hats hit and the center track ducks with each hit of the bass drum.

Disquiet Junto Project 0084: Quotidian Thread

This week’s project involves field recordings. It entails the process of connecting two brief recordings of everyday sound. The connection is made by locating an element within each of the two recordings, and then creating a transition from one to the next. The finished track should be a maximum of 60 seconds long. As always, it is greatly appreciated if you can describe your decision-making in the text that accompanies your uploaded track.

The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Record two brief field recordings. One should be fairly noisy and the other relatively quiet.

Step 2: Listen closely to both recordings and locate a useful 10-second segment in each. Trim the two 10-second segments.

Step 3: Listen closely to the fairly noisy 10-second segment, and in it locate a single sound that is prominent enough to be isolated.

Step 4: Listen closely to the relatively quiet 10-second segment, and in it locate a single sound that is prominent enough to be isolated.

Step 5: Develop an original composition that is structured as follows: The first 10 seconds are of the noisy field recording. During the final second, the noisy field recording should slowly fade out. As it fades, the one sound you have elected to isolate in Step 3 should continue playing. After the rest of the recording has faded away entirely, that one isolated sound from Step 3 should slowly transform into the sound that you elected to isolate in step 4. Once the transition from the Step 3 isolate to the Step 4 isolate is complete, you should fade in the 10-segment of the relatively quiet field recording.

Step 6: You are now done.

Length: Your track should have a duration of between 30 and 60 seconds.

After reading this weeks Junto project, I started thinking about developing the E G D motif into the melody and into the harmonic elements for my piece...
So I went down that road, ending up with three lines forming a counterpoint. Recorded that as midi tracks in Ableton one at a time (I'm not much of a piano player) Then came time to figure out what sounds to use - having been listening to Martin Rachs piano pieces lately, made me think along the lines of a toy piano sound - tried it but didn't like it. Left it for the night, but woke up at 4AM and decided to finish it with what started the piece - the Grandpiano sample heard on the track, through a convolution reverb and then downsampled to 8bit...a little mastering and done...back to bed maybe?

This project investigates video game sound — not the sound of video games, but the sound of game consoles themselves. The newly released Xbox One has its own distinct startup melody of just three notes: first an E, then a G, then a D. The project this week is to imagine those notes being the core of an original piece of music: What if the theme of the Xbox One were a song, and a lo-fi one at that?

The project instruction is as follows: Record a piece of music with an 8-bit flavor. It should begin with a replication of that same three-note Xbox One pattern (E G D), repeated several times, and then veer off into whatever direction you desire. As the track goes along, feel free to add common video game sounds like explosions, karate chops, crowd noises, engines revving and so forth. Try to keep the whole thing under 90 seconds.

Deadline: Monday, November 25, 2013, at 11:59pm wherever you are.

Length: Your track’s length should be between 30 seconds and 90 seconds.

**Production Notes**

In 1983, a friend of mine bought a C64. We had played in a band and tried to squeeze some music out of the SID-Chip. Of course we failed, as it was totally un-intuitive. 

Then I got hooked on games. I was studying at the university; and finally I was entirely broke at the end of the semester. So I applied for some temporal job at a computer magazine in Munich. Lucky enough, got the job and became an editor pretty quick. Changed my life entirely. 

As for the production: Just some Reaktor Ensembles and a lot of samples from an iPad-App called "Retro Sounds" - highly recommended for those retro blips and booms. Played some cheesy bassline, some chords in E-G-D - and off it went.
