A collaboration between Alex Silva (https://soundcloud.com/faceofman, http://alexsilvamusic.com/), Willie Avendano (https://soundcloud.com/willieavendano, https://soundcloud.com/selfies) and myself, "The June Tyson Sessions" is an abstract experimental sound project produced solely from vocal samples of June Tyson, often credited as "U Other Space Ethnic Voice" when performing as the lead vocalist for Sun Ra's various "arkestras" and free-jazz performance outfits. June Tyson's vocal performances have been praised by musicians and thinkers from Sun Ra himself to Amiri Baraka to John Cage, Kodwo Eshun and beyond, as that which propels Ra's work "out there," as the improvisatory female voice through which "sometimes the Universe speaks," and the performative female embodiment of Sun Ra's "myth-science Alter-destiny." However, in multiple interviews, Tyson reveals that often she performed in a "do-as-told" mode, with Sun Ra literally whispering his cosmic philosophies to her on stage word-for-word, providing the linguistic incantations to be ritualistically performed. 

This project asks if there is some way that Tyson's voice can be deterretorialized and reconstituted so as to parse out the distinct materialities and vitalities that enable her sonic performances to resonate in such a speculative and affirmative realm. We are interested in separating June Tyson's voice from Sun Ra's hegemonic thought-control in a move of feminist and queer reactivation and affirmation. The key to this strategy comes in treating the vocal samples as objects exhibiting their own set of affects and allures, their own performative potentialities, their own array of contingencies to be folded over and twisted around each other in a process of revealing their speculative potential and our complicity with their immanent material-discursive behaviors and vitalities.  Affectively and effectively, this project seeks to rematerialize June Tyson as a cosmic artisan, creator of forces and arranger of forms. This is a queering of vocality and sonic materiality through the experimental creation of multiple questions, answers and sono-speculative resonances. "The June Tyson Sessions" aims to enable a queer feminist recalibration of the performativity of the materiality of the voice of June Tyson, showing that there's much more to Tyson's "Other Space Ethnic Voice" than the man whispering his cosmic-Afrogospels in her ear....

Sunny greetings from Berlin !! Its March, 08th and K K Podcast Berlin is back on air and just in time for World Women's Day, we present to you Electric Indigo from Vienna, Austria !!
Electric Indigo has been working as international DJ and musician for more than 20 years. Her name stands for the intelligent interpretation of Techno and electronic music. She started to explore live improvisation and free musical experimentation in 2002. In doing so with musicians like Pia Palme, Annelie Gahl or Dorit Chrysler, she disregards usual genre limits.
Important works in recent years comprise multi-channel compositions like "Chiffres" [premiere at Wien Modern / e_may Festival 2012], "ABSTRIAL" [a contemporary opera and collaborative work with Pia Palme, Paola Bianchi and Ivan Fantini, premiere at KosmosTheater, Vienna, 2013], "109.47 degrees" [premiere at Dunkle Zeiten Festival, Vienna, 2014], "Morpheme" [a/v version with visuals by Thomas Wagensommerer, premiere at CTM Festival, Berlin, 2015].
Her new record "Cinq/Zero" was released on Suicide Circus Dark Series in January 2015. Together with Trishes, Electric Indigo will curate the Popfest Vienna 2015.

Bio: 

Electric Indigo works as musician, composer and DJ. Her name stands for the intelligent interpretation of techno and electronic music. She started her DJ career in 1989 in Vienna and worked at the legendary Hard Wax record store in Berlin from 1993 to 1996. In 1998, she created female:pressure, an international database for female artists in the fields of electronic music and digital arts which got an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2009. In 2012, she received the 'oustanding artist award' in the category Computer Music and the national grant for composition 2013 from the Austrian Ministry for Arts and Culture. She makes music for concert spaces, clubs, sound installations and occasionally for stage plays and short films. In her compositions and live performances, she emphasizes the spatial-temporal placement of subtly elaborated sounds and structures, often generated from speech recordings. Electric Indigo shuttles between Vienna and Berlin.

EDC Sunrise 2016

Hope y'all enjoyed my set at Meeresrausch Festival I've played on Saturday morning. The weather was sweet, the sun was shining and I had a really great time. Some tracks of the last unreleased 30 minutes I will play at Fusion Festival so I decided to cut the recording after 120min... Besides there are some tracks played from vinyl so you will hear a little loudness difference from time to time... even if I've already normalized the recording. Wishing you a nice musical journey!

****** SOUNDS FROM ADDIS ABABA******
‘an ode to the people of Ethiopia’

Addis Ababa, the un-official capital of east-Africa, consists out of an uncountable amount of scents, colours and sounds arising from an extreme diversity of daily human, cultural and religious acts. From the famous and overcrowded ‘Mercato Market’, the biggest market in Africa, where you can buy everything you can think of and more, up to a large amount of churches and mosques that sing consecutively and brotherly together. From the plodding shoe-cleaners, corn-sellers and scale-boys to the palaces from Haile Selassie and the visible growing modern and rich ‘Bole’. All this is glued together by an inimitable cloud of small taxi-vans, served on a big and tasty Injera, that will bring you, in a cosy entanglement with other Addisians, for not more than 20 euro cents all over town.

This plural mix of Ethiopian ingredients is shown the best in the extremely rich and genius Ethiopian music tradition, which embodies the deep respect and knowledge of the ancestors. Traditional (tribal) music from different parts of Ethiopia mixed in the 1970 (this decade is also known as the ‘golden era’ of Ethiopian music and was brutally interrupted by the cruel intervention of the communist regime of the Junta, which lasted for 20 years, leaving a big scar in the Ethiopian society) with other music genres from around the world, leading to what is nowadays known as the ‘Ethio-jazz music’.

My brief but fascinating meeting with the Ethiopian rich culture, and the amazingly friendly Ethiopian people that let me into their lives, lead to this podcast, which consists out of more than 50 live recordings of sounds from the street, interviews and many musical performances. All this together became my ‘Ode to the people of Ethiopia’. I’m thankful for all the great people I met, the music I got to know and the sounds that Addis Ababa presented to me. I will be back Ethiopia, because those sounds are just a first impression, the tip of the iceberg.
