This piece is a little bit theme, a little bit song, and a little bit requiem.

While I'm a little embarrassed by how emotional I've been over the loss of a pet, I also recognize how close we become to our animals, and how we both invest and are rewarded with love and emotion because of having them.

This was composed in an effort to try to get my emotions out during a sad but necessary time, and to create a memorial for a beloved pet. At first I fretted (no pun intended) over the ridiculously simple chord progression and repetitive melody—until I realized that my emotions were likewise stuck in a simple, repetitive loop, rehashing again and again our sadness and loss. I find myself humming the melody as a representation of my feelings, repeating it far more often that it would be played in a single performance of the piece... that makes me think I got it right.

PROGRAM NOTE:
Because the 50th anniversary season of WomenSing honored not only the choir but also five notable women, including Hildegard of Bingen, I wanted to celebrate this theme with a text that was both universally inclusive and appropriate for WomenSing's December concert.  

Erasure poetry, my inspiration for this particular adaptation of Hildegard's text describing the Virgin Mary, takes an original piece of text and omits or “erases” certain words to create a new poem. In this piece, I chose to set to music a secular erasure of Hildegard's "Ave generosa" text to embrace and celebrate Hildegard herself and all women, regardless of faith. While the sacred words have been omitted, the empty space they create is nonetheless reflected in the singers' lines, through both rests and neutral syllables. 

Ave generosa is dedicated to WomenSing (Martín Benvenuto, Artistic Director) on the occasion of its 50th anniversary and commissioned through the Marcia Hodges New Music Fund.
