We're back with Aria Rostami's Czarat EP, Spring Theory's sophmore release. Rostami is a San Francisco-based musician whose roots extend off into theoretical dimensions far beyond conventional dancefloor fodder (his material has appeared on labels like Audiobulb and Crash Symbols). For Czarat, however, he's honed his approach to produce an unusual dancefloor anthem. Melding influences from around the world, the song arrives at something that sounds like acid house and techno as interpreted through an internet-enabled, information rich dialog of the present moment.&#13;
&#13;
The names of the songs on the release hint at this culture clash. Opener "Czarat" is a fusion of the Russian word "Czar" and the ancient Persian god "Zarathustra." Rostami refers to this as a "cultural mishmash" and ultimately the names are a nonsense words, creating something new from familiar ideas. The song stands as a reference to the melting pot of disparate sounds within: Motorik Krautrock and North African rhythmic pulsations, Arab synth solos, Chicago acid lines, and Japanese riffing results in an overarching East meets West sensibility, gelling together to create something novel from a chaotic, contemporary trans-cultural communication. And while seemingly heady in its references, hidden beneath its surface is a banging house music core that positions the track well for those moments when the spotlights cut out and the strobes kick in.&#13;
&#13;
Or, for less intense moments, LA's Secret Circuit takes Rostami's original and re-interprets it as sunny Balearica, with warm acoustic guitars and delay washes that make for a round, mellow feeling that keeps the energy laidback, sleek, and sexy — like a tripped-out renegade party on some forgotten beach along California's Pacific Coast Highway.&#13;
&#13;
Finally, "Vietnamoses" rounds things out. A completely different direction, it reveals aspects of Rostami's more experimental side, with a downtempo feeling inspired by (but, we stress, not evocative of) dub-techno juxtaposed with less overt influences from music around the world with it's twangs and drones. Space is the key here — his whipping drum patterns lull a hypnotic trance beneath massive walls of metallic echo and delay and a heightened focus on transition (one of Rostami's favorite themes) allows the song to grow in unexpected ways.

A debut release for both band and label, Parisian duo Paradis' bring two eloquently produced tracks to Beats In Space in the form of the Parfait Tirage b/w La Ballade de Jim 12" (BIS001). Admirers from afar of DJ Tim Sweeney's weekly on air institution of 12 years (from which the label takes its name), Paradis submitted demos hoping they might hack it for some play time. 

Reared on classical and jazz, turned young hip hop rebels, turned teen club crawlers, and then university machine tinkerers, Simon Mény & Pierre Rousseau grew out of genre jumping while young enough to stay ahead and settle into music making centered around melody and emotion. 

This touchstone approach is perfectly apparent on "Parfait Tirage", a track built around sublime synth ambiance, a compelling sequence lead, and what will one day be unmistakably recognized as the Paradis vocal sound. The b-side, "La Ballade of Jim", is a deep techno take on beloved French artist Alain Souchon's track from the 80s, and already a staple in Sweeney's live set.

Returning to Beats in Space after their debut 12" (and the label's debut release) in the fall of 2011, Paradis offers "Hémisphère" and "Je m'ennuie", another pair of sophisticatedly crafted, noir-pop songs from the young Parisian duo.

On the two tracks of their second 12", Paradis self-reflect to find an escape hatch away from themselves. The A-Side, "Hémisphère", a macabre story of a lonely guest of life determined to leave everything behind, defies the narrative's convention and captivates with pop melodies and up beats abound.

On the B-Side, "Je M'ennuie", lovers settle into late-night melancholic routines soundtracked by a brooding bass line, an achingly affective synth lead, and vocals that grin behind the disaffected front. Ultimately, hope prevails as both tracks beg the listener to leave their headphones behind for the global village's dance floor. From Paris to Cologne, from Buenos Aires to New York, in the words of Michel Polnareff, "On ira tous au Paradis."

As one of Los Angeles finest psychedelic adventurers Eddie has been releasing music for labels from California’s leftfield-balearic icons Exist Dance to DFA’s own resident DJ, Tim Sweeney’s new Beats In Space label.   

Following his blink and you miss it Laughing Light Of Plenty project’s LP (alongside Rub’nTug man Thomas Bullock) on Whateverwewant Records – this collection of Eddie’s solo Secret Circuit project is a sprawling array of his cassette-only releases dating back from 1996 to 2010.  

Taking in his love of pyschedelia, techno, minimalism and Satie experimentation, the resulting album is a Balearic-Tropical-Afro-Psychedelic whirl.

With a live show to match and more music to come on the likes of ESP Institute, as well as remixes for Peter Tosh and Soft Rocks being championed across the spectrum, Eddie is finally getting the props his meandering career deserves.

The lucky seventh release on Beats In Space Records rolls on the back of an ecstatic track from Dennis ‘DJ’ McNany – aka Jee Day. A fixture in the NYC dance community as label boss of Run Roc Records, a touring member of The Juan MacLean and an accomplished producer in his own right (see the Like A Child and Auro Go 12s for DFA), McNany knows what music makes a crowd lose its collective mind.

“Sum of Love” is inspired by that euphoric dance floor climax. After a particularly stimulating conversation with a Brazilian sage at his apartment on a cold winter night, McNany dusted off a MC-202 bass sequencer and got to programming the pulse of “Sum of Love.” Envisioning the spacious outdoor Brooklyn venue where McNany was set to hold down a summer residency, the track euphorically evolved into a sure fire smash after McNany’s friend Jee Young Sim recorded two tenderly melodic verses and the duo hammered out the emphatic “call for love” chorus.

With the encouragement of McNany’s friend and collaborator Pat Mahoney, the track was finished and passed from one Dropbox to the next until it found its way to Beats In Space. We passed it along to our friend Lauer, who in turn submitted a house-y remix not far from the tree but rooted in a different kind of dub. Just in time for another summer, these two tracks leave the nest to find new friends of feather in the burning love weather.
