London-based producing duo Raz & Afla return to the limelight with their new EP, Mama Weja EP, being released via Paris-based label Mawimbi. Mawimbi specializes as purveyors of vibrant Afro-House music, which makes them the perfect home for Raz & Afla’s newest release. The duo has been steadily building a name for themselves as mainstays of London’s eclectic dance music scene, developing their exciting fusion of traditional West African and modern house music with releases via labels such as Beating Heart, Afro Zone, and Fossil Sounds.

“Mama Weja”, the closing track on the latest EP, continues to do just that. The track is a bold, immersive take on Afro-House, influenced strongly by West African musical traditions. A carefully utilized selection of traditional African instruments, including hypnotic balafon and djembe rhythms, create the perfect compliment to Afla’s vocal incantations. These are seamlessly counterpointed by increasingly-warped vocals and Raz’s house-inspired breaks, which punctuate the track’s epic 6-and-a-half-minute runtime. The result is an incredibly refreshing and inventive cut of Afro-House music that consistently pushes the boundaries of what this exciting subgenre can offer.

Ahead of my gig at the Jazz Cafe, I thought i'd make Mother Theresa available as a free download until 25th August. Recorded in Havana, Cuba 2015 and released as part of the Highlife World Series pt 1  :)

"The highlight for us is Auntie Flo’s ‘Mother Theresa’, a lazy track with a free-flowing melody. Subdued compared to the others on the EP, the smoky jazz influence is unexpected, with a wandering trumpet introducing itself halfway through. As the track’s soft pads and percussive textures build, you’re caught up in the spiralling solo and the track’s brassy crescendo."

“Mental Mother” can sound like the title to a gothic themed short story or Black Mirror episode, but the song itself has utopian strains, the synth progressions are uplifting, there is a feeling of assurance and warmth, the minds work prodvucing a nurturing mother, a better day, a sustaining world.

With every track on the EP, Project Sandro articulates cinematic and lush environs. With restraint and elegance the songs build soundscapes that give the listener room to engage with a range of emotions from the dark and foreboding to the light of some resolved clarity. Project Sandro does this at their own pace, nothing feels forced or contrived, there are no sleight of hands or overt manipulations, like all good art the songs have faith in their intent. The listener is offered a sense of place that they can inhabit, the specifics provided by our subjectivity, the songs rhythms carrying us to our destinations. Project Sandro’s first Ep is an assured offering and sets the standard for what hopefully will be a prolific oeuvre.
