I Just Can’t Avoid the Void in Avoid is a multichannel composition based on intro feedbacks ripped from punk and hardcore recordings released between 1981 and 2018.

While feedback had been a common feature of live electronic music performance since John Cage, in hardcore and punk (and associated genres) it became a harbinger of unrelenting rawness and abrupt energy outbursts. Heralding the onslaught of the rhythm section and a transition to exuberant acceleration, feedback in hardcore punk unfolds like a fractal in endless variations and is more a sound signature than a material choice.

For I Just Can’t Avoid the Void in Avoid I collected and recomposed around 1500 snippets of feedback – with John Oswald and the acousmatic listening experience in mind. The material is released from its original context and turned into something it never wanted to be: a free-floating abstract sound, stripped of band, player and composer, and referring to nothing but itself.
