Significant social change has not been an overnight process in the industrial zone of Poblenou in Barcelona. In the last ten years, the area has seen the closure of squats, unlicensed nightclubs and, of course, the renovation of tens of city blocks that were previously canvasses for graffiti decoration.

Some people, who found themselves in the way of the urban renewal project now known as 22@, lost more than just a place to explore or party: they lost their homes. Tenants occupying buildings that were considered surplus to the requirements of the new Barcelona were moved to modern flats nearby: possibly in better condition, but without the charm, soul and sense of belonging that is attached to bricks and mortar.

The results are now there to see. Futuristic edifices line wide boulevards. Businesses occupy the ground-floor lots, serving tech workers on their lunch breaks and tourists staying at one of the many new hotels. There is little life at the weekend, save the attraction of independent businesses that have cropped up in some of the older blocks that remain. It is now, and will probably continue to be, a neighbourhood of contrasts: cold new architecture within several meters walk of a rare passage of bungalows, disoriented tourists and proud locals, T-Systems and L’Estoc, McDonalds and Bar Manolo.

The first KFAX publication, a new series of zine releases from Klasse provides an aural and visual soundtrack to an exercise in distopic science fiction governance. Vintage synths and analogue film tell the tale of an antiquated way of life, bleak compositions and pads describe the inevitable triumph of the officials. Robotic design and programming hint at the systematic future in store for the once bohemian district.
