A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, bandleader, and blues guitar prodigy who jumped on a festival stage at the age of 12, Reggie Sears hails from the South Florida area. Raised on everything from the Isley Brothers to Pink Floyd, Sears was just 12 when his dad took him to his first blues jam, an event that gave him the idea that performing music professionally was in his future. It happened fast too, as that same year he was invited to join Fruteland Jackson at the Sound Advice Blues Festival, and soon Sears was a blues sideman, joining the likes of Solomon Burke, Pinetop Perkins, Guitar Shorty, and Shemekia Copeland on-stage. Gigs with the Temptations and Inner Circle broadened his sideman distinction into other genres, then in 2004 he formed his own backing band, which made its recording debut in 2005 with the jazz-rock-influenced effort Transitions. After a nationwide tour to support the debut album, he recorded and released the sophomore set Blues Power in 2006, with third effort Southern Soul, Florida Style landing later in the year. His 2009 effort Sweet Thang was put on hold due to problems with his label, and while Sears felt stuck and depressed with his career because of the delay, a tour as Fred Bolton's guitarist and opening act was a welcome break from recordings. With his commitment renewed, Sears returned in 2010 with a string of singles, including the Southern soul hit "Dirty Dancer." His 2011 single "Can't Get You Out of My System" featured more of an R&B sound, as did 2012's "With Every Beat of My Heart." In 2015, Sears announced work on his next album, aptly titled So Many Roads.

What happens when you put a blues legend, Texas Johnny Brown, with “this little lady?” According to William Michael Smith of the Houston Press… “Laird’s eyes got big when Brown nodded to her to take the first solo. And the young redhead stung it like a bumblebee. Roll Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt into a 100 pound, 18 year old package, and you’ll have some idea of what this little lady can do with a guitar. In fact she stung it so hard and so legitimately that Brown just smiled, nodded to her to take another solo, closed his eyes and laid in the rhythm while the little lady proceeded to tear up some blues.” - The Houston Press

Rebecca Laird picked up a guitar at age 13 and hasn’t let go of one since! She grew up playing classic rock as well as Christian rock at church, retreats and other events with her Dad in the band, Servant’s Heart. (She is still their lead guitar player) One day she saw Stevie Ray Vaughan on a PBS special. In Rebecca’s words, “When I saw him for the first time on TV, it was like getting hit by a train! Hearing Stevie totally changed everything I wanted to do musically. I wanted to play with whatever it was that Stevie had which makes you feel like someone’s punched you in the gut. I’m still not exactly sure what that is, but it has to do with playing from the heart.”

Needless to say, her first Blues musical influences were Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. As Rebecca researched who influenced them, she poured over the music of Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Guitar Slim, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Gatemouth Brown and so on. Texas blues is in her DNA.

Rebecca, a Houston native, has been honored to be a two-time recipient of the Jimmy “T-99” Nelson Scholarship Award for Youth awarded by The Houston Blues Society. For the past three years she has received scholarships from The National Guitar Workshop to attend their Blues Summit in Austin Texas.

Once, she inadvertently opened for Hubert Sumlin (guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf), Bob Margolin (guitarist for Muddy Waters) and Pinetop Perkins (piano player for Muddy Waters) at Antones one night in July 2010 - great story! She also had the chance to play with Elvin Bishop and his band on stage. She opened for Ted Nugent at a Wounded Warriors benefit concert with Little Terry Rogers, Spare Time Murray and Marc Dufrene (The BluesBirds). She has had the privilege of sharing the stage with many great musicians in Houston and Austin.

Rebecca has worked with Dan Workman at Sugar Hill Recording Studios for the Cari Quoyeser Band. Rebecca is the lead guitarist in the Cari Q Band to which she brings a blues flavor to their latest CD “Blueprints to Infinity.” Watch for Cari on this season’s American Idol!

Since 1996 the Music Avenue Group of Labels has released nearly 500 albums on our various labels: Blues Boulevard, Rokarola and Royale Palme, in a variety of musical styles performed by a number of eclectic artists such as; the avant-garde funkster George Clinton, Reggae superstars Third World, Classic Rock acts like Cactus, Country Rockers Poco, Soul giants James Brown and Solomon Burke and Blues-Rock pioneers Canned Heat. 

The Blues Boulevard label was founded at the start of the new Millennium with the purpose of harbouring a growing number of Blues artists signed to Music Avenue. The label has released albums by Blues-Rock pioneers such as Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Elvin Bishop, as well as reissues of recordings by Blues legends such as Albert, B.B. and Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Little Walter, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, and the late great pioneer of Blues, R&B and Rock, the infamous but underrated Ike Turner. Today label’s roster also contains a number of fine artists representing the future of Blues music, such as Lucky Peterson, David Migden & The Twisted Roots, Paddy Milner (Jack Bruce Band), Doghouse Sam & His Magnatones (runner-up in the 2015 International Blues Challenge competition in Brussels, Belgium), and Howlin’ Bill (winner of the 2011 International Blues Challenge competition in Berlin, Germany) in addition to some Blues-influenced guitar-driven Rock acts such as Rob Tognoni, Blues Karloff, Fred & The Healers, Brad Wilson, and Innes Sibun (previously with Robert Plant), as well as Tyrone Vaughan, son of Jimmie Vaughan, nephew of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who released his debut album “Downtime” on Blues Blvd, and who recently joined Royal Southern Brotherhood. In 2014 Blues Boulevard Records inked a 3-album deal with Corey Harris, the guitarist/ songwriter, who is leading a contemporary revival of Country Blues.  Harris is a truly unique voice in music, on his way to becoming the alchemist of black music, recombining its constituent elements into new substances by recording old songs of the Blues tradition while also creating an original vision of this music by adding influences from Reggae, Soul, Rock and West African music.  The latest addition to the label is Troy Redfern, a master slide guitarist backed by one of the most exciting bands to have emerged in Great Britain in recent times.

In September 2014 Ben Granfelt, who played with Wishbone Ash from 2001 – 2004, issued “Handmade” via our Rokarola imprint. Granfelt has played guitar for 40 years of which 30 as a professional musician, playing on 32 albums, 12 of them bearing his own name. 2014 was also the year that the guitar virtuoso celebrated his 20th anniversary as the Ben Granfelt Band and to mark the occasion he will release a 3-disc (2 CD + DVD) of live performances entitled “The 20tH Anniversary Tour.”

Founded by Alfie Falckenbach in 1982; today the now legendary Mausoleum Records label is part of the Music Avenue Group. More than three decades later, the pioneering imprint continues to be a leading purveyor of heavy metal music. During the course of its existence Mausoleum Records has harboured classic metal bands such as Anvil, Faithful Breath, Great White, Killer, L.A. Guns, Molly Hatchet, Nazareth, Omen, Ostrogoth, and Warlock (Doro). Konexion Records, a subsidiary label, predominantly issued punk music by artist such as the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, the Exploited, and the UK Subs. J. Curly Speegle’s extensive touring career includes his role as lead guitarist and vocalist for Leon Russell for several years. He has also lent his talents to Eddie Hinton, Taylor Hicks, Adam Hood, Damon Johnson, Grammy Award winner O’teil Burbridge (Allman Brothers, Oteil and The Peacemakers), Stacy Mitchhart, John McEuen and Kenny Olson (Kid Rock, Experience Hendrix). J. Curly has shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Dave Mason, Bob Dylan, Sonny Landreth, Johnny Winter, John Lee Hooker, Jr., Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Government Mule, Shooter Jennings and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Born and raised in the heart of Alabama, the earlier Muscle Shoals players influenced and shaped this singer/songwriter’s soul-rock sound and style as an artist, and set the impassioned J. Curly on a path to become the commanding guitarist he is today.

I began playing guitar at 7. Gigging locally at 9. Went full time on the road at 18. Recorded and toured with Great Southern Railroad, Copperhead, and Elijah Prophet. Played the “Lynyrd Skynyrd Simple Man Cruise” w/ Preacher Stone. Released four solo CD’s and recently an album with Pinetop Lightning. Has opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kid Rock, Blackberry Smoke,Brantley Gilbert, Big and Rich, 38 Special……(full list on website). Currently recording new music for the “Electric Rock and Roll Show” and playing select dates (Jackyl, Summerfest, etc.) while performing across the southeast with his solo acoustic show.

For Spencer, the past year was spent rediscovering who he is both as a person and an artist. “I really have come to believe that my job as an artist is to help people access their emotions. My first job is to help people feel something; anything. I want us all to be able to celebrate our shared humanity, regardless of where we come from.”

With this revived energy, Spencer spent the winter of 2014 in the studio working on his fifth album "Daybreak". The album is filled with a selection of classic tunes from the 60s in addition to five original songs that he wrote in a style to pay homage to them. “The whole album is really a reflection of where I stand at this moment; more happy than I’ve ever been in my adult life.”

Spencer was raised in the small town of Pinetop, Arizona by his mother, an accomplished music teacher and soprano vocalist. Her talent and love of music encouraged and influenced him to become the singer and musician he is today. Spencer found inspiration in the works of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and many others. These artists are the foundation of Spencer’s creative process and continue to influence his writing and performance style.

Over the years, Spencer’s fan base has grown immensely and continues to grow. A clear tipping point was in 2007 when he was asked to perform at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, which led to many requests to headline in a number of music venues including: Yoshi’s in San Francisco and Oakland, the Plush Room, the Great American Music Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl in LA. On the east coast, he has earned rave reviews for performances at Town Hall, Joe’s Pub, and the Canal Room in New York City. He has also headlined internationally in England, Japan, Australia and Mexico.

The beginning of 2014 has been jam-packed with international touring, writing and recording new music. He is also looking forward to traveling to Spain to perform at the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival this May and he has Daybreak CD release parties scheduled for Birdland Jazz in NYC, Feinstein’s at the Nikko in SF, Jazz Alley in Seattle and other venues in the US and abroad.
