Crawl Space

A somber, atmospheric cinematic track that creates a spacious, bleak, contemplative soundscape. The main theme, played by a small string section, rises and falls in solemn melodic waves. the violins and celli are accompanied by subtle synth textures, graceful bells and discreet orchestral percussion.   Usage example: This track was featured in the award-winning 2012 short film 'The Rising' that was shown on a festival tour in cinemas around the world.

Chaos Theory

According to ancient and medieval science, aether, also spelled æther or ether, also called quintessence, is the material that fills the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere.

Drawing from my time spent at the Salton Sea. Situated in the Colorado Desert in California's Imperial Valley, the lake is extremely isolated yet remarkably beautiful. Notably silent, the lake shores of the once bustling resort destination of the 1950's, are now abandoned due to rising salinity levels and pollution from agricultural runoff. With only a few species of fish able to survive the high salinity levels, the Salton Sea is surrounded by death. Yet the lake remains mesmerizing.  I tried capturing this juxtaposition by creating live textural strings beds which we recorded and then re-amped and manipulated many times over. Scraping bows on broken strings also accompany worn organs, a glockenspiel and piano.

The Nashville duo Hammock — celebrated by Pitchfork, NPR, the BBC, The Atlantic, and Ricky Gervais — returns on August 25 with Mysterium, the band’s eighth album since its founding in 2003. Composed as a memorial to Clark Kern, a son-like figure to Hammock co-founder Marc Byrd who died in 2016 from the tumor strain NF2, Mysterium merges modern classical, ambient, and choral music, and it’s of a piece with recent records by Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson. The gorgeous, hour-long collection features contributions from the Berlin mix engineer Francesco Donadello (Winged Victory for the Sullen, Ólafur Arnalds), Peter Katis (The National, Jónsi, Interpol), and the Hamburg orchestrator Roman Vinuesa (“Iris,” “Umrika”), who transcribed scores for the Budapest Art Choir.

"Cinnamon" is the evolution of Spoq's previous work: Deeply cinematic and emotional melodies meet lush textures and genre transcending beats. It is definitely introverted music inspired by life, people, nature with all its beauty but also it's edges, scratches, scars and conflicts. It is visual art, transformed into melodic adventures. It is a story without dialogue, a film without video. Wolfram Gruss, the writer behind Spoq, used his experience from composing film music to create an album, that has always also images in mind. Although all tracks are purely instrumental, the analogue and synthetic instruments used are highly associative. Throughout the 24 tracks ranging from Trip Hop, Ambient to IDM and Electro, the music is always thought provoking and organically stimulates the imagination of the listener. "Cinnamon" is Spoq's most complete and balanced album so far.
