Silently the Shades of Evening is a Civil War–era hymn cycle told from the perspective of a God-fearing army surgeon, Christopher Christian Cox. It opens with an instrumental portrait of Baltimore on the brink of war, then follows his choice to don army blue, his first exposure to battlefield carnage, and the long nights inside canvas hospitals lit only by lanterns. Songs arise in the very places where the wounded lie—campfires before dawn, crowded wards, and a quiet riverbank where he tries to make sense of what he’s seen. Instrumental pieces move the war forward in waves of battle and exhaustion, while the vocal tracks are the surgeon’s own sung prayers and field hymns, written to steady frightened soldiers and his own soul. The album closes with an evening hymn that gathers all the sorrow, mercy, and small acts of courage into one twilight song, pointing toward the later hymn-writing life that waits beyond the war.
