Chase K 'Long, Long Way Down' Produce Like a Pro Academy Remixes

Al convertirse en padre por primera vez en el primer día del año 2018, Jon Magnusson se enfrentó al desafío de cuidar a un pequeño y al mismo tiempo seguir haciendo música. Pero siempre lleno de ideas, en lugar de poner a un lado la música, Jon comenzó a hacer canciones completas de las pequeñas rimas y melodías que inventó para divertir a su hija. 

Hablando español e inglés con fluidez, al lado de su lengua materna, sueco, Jon alternaba entre los tres idiomas escribiendo las canciones, y luego tradujo la mayoría de ellos a todos los tres idiomas, con la excepción de algunos que resultaron demasiado difíciles de transformar. Y como resultado, Jon emite no uno, sino tres álbumes diferentes con canciones para niños, mostrando tanto su habilidad musical como lingüística. 

Además de estar inspirado por los diferentes idiomas, este álbum es un mosaico de diferentes géneros e influencias. Desde músicos tradicionales basados en guitarra acústica hasta ritmos latinos, baladas, música country e incluso una canción de reggae sobre cómo lavarse los dientes. Combinado con las letras conmovedoras pero pegadizas, este álbum marca un impresionante debut para Jon Magnusson como artista de canciones infantiles.

The reason I made this song is a competition held by the label Yunizon and the new platform Emanate to promote the release of the single “Tables Have Turned” by the artist Ralph. Most people chose to take the voice and instruments from the original version to do a remix, but I wanted to make the song my own. So I took the melody and harmonics and changed them up a little bit to better fit my style of acoustic guitar. Then I added some strings instruments to the arrangement and finally I ended up with a version that was above my own expectations.

I then sent the song in as my entry for the competition, together with over 170 other entries. So even though I was pretty happy with the end result, I didn’t have that much hope of winning.

So, to my surprise, some weeks later when I got an e-mail that announced I was among the 10 entries that was considered to win some of the three top prices. And in the end I didn’t end up top 3, but no less than first runner up, and I couldn’t be more happy.

Singer-songwriter David Ottestad aka The Workday Release tracked a version of his beautiful, somber song from a sketchbook, '25 Ago' whilst demonstrating a 'MixerFace Mobile Recording Interface' for the Produce Like a Pro YouTube Channel. As soon as I heard, '25 Ago' I knew I wanted to remix it.  I kept the vocals and cooked up some Tobisonics.

The Workday Release '25 Ago (Unofficial Remix)'

My mix of “Long Long Way Down” by Chase K. Thanks to Warren Huart - Produce Like A Pro.

I rejigged the structure a little.  Kept the acoustic guitars, but sampled, retimed and looped them.  Kept the drum loop, but moved it and gave it some 'vibe' via JST Pixelator.   And kept the epic 'goat kick'.

I then added additional production with 808 kick and new snare, plus snaps, tambo, hi hat, and claps.  And cymbal + crash hits on the choruses.  Plus a riser for the intro and before 1st + 2nd chorus.

Added synth bass, piano and vocoder parts to the chorus.  Synth bass was EQ-ed intentionally light.  The piano makes use of an augumented chord to help emphasize the vocal melody.

On my mix (see below), the vocoder parts are mixed to 'thicken' the lead vocal.  I used four copies of U-He Diva into 4 copies of iZotope Vocal Synth to create as smoove and lush a vocoder sound as possible.  Crazy use of the CPU to just blend as a thickening FX - but hey, that's just how I roll.  

I also introduced string and brass parts.  Both were played on keys, tightened in midi and processed to sound like loops.  The brass part is a change from the original chord structure.  I struggle with the repeat verse pattern in the bridge and breakdown, so I wrote a new chord pattern.

I built the instrumentation around Chase's voice and kept it light to make his voice feel as big and warm as possible.  The song is also about being up in an airplane - so it kinda makes sense.

Originally I asked Patrick to mix my production.  I really liked where he went with it but felt that it didn't reflect my original intentions for the remix.  I decided it was best to have two versions and so let Patrick go with his gut on his mix and did my own mix too.
