BACKGROUND
Playing lead guitar in several garage bands, some with Norman Rodger and Ally Palmer who went on to form TV21, he also played lead guitar in the Bootlegs with pre-Waterboys Mike Scott. Under the name of DNV, they released a single in 1978 entitled Death in Venice which has now become a punk rarity. Despite pursuing a successful academic career, he has continued to follow his musical passions, a form of retro-pop for the 21st century. Influences start with the Beatles, Byrds, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound (Ronettes, Supremes), Kinks, Small Faces, Who and chamber pop of the 1960s (Dusty Springfield), through the anthems of Mott the Hoople and David Bowie in the early to mid 1970s, followed close on their heels by the re-energising forces of punk, particularly the Clash, Jam and Buzzcocks, then detouring via the Smiths, Stone Roses and Blur, and inspired by contemporaries such as Richard Hawley, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Teenage Fanclub, Mull Historical Society, and Spiritualized. His songs are never short of memorable hooks with an underlying independent sensibility. His first album Chimes of All My Life (2015)was produced by Gerry Gregory and Allan McConnell, and was recorded in Glasgow and Sydney. All instruments by Allan McConnell, expect Drums (Paul McConnell) and assorted backing vocals (Paul McConnell, Gerry Gregory and Sean McGarvey). His second album, Halfway to the Moon, scheduled for release in April 2021.  is entirely self-written and self-produced.
