Seit gut vier Jahren machen Martin und ich nun zusammen Musik - im März sind wir endlich mal dazu gekommen, ein gemeinsames Live Set mitzuschneiden. Die gut dreieinhalb Stunden stammen aus der Berliner Magdalena, wo wir Anfang März zwei eindrucksvolle Gigs hatten - ein großes Danke an alle, die dabei waren und mit uns gefeiert haben! Wie immer bei unseren gemeinsamen Sets werden die Tracks durch elektronische Live Percussions von Martin begleitet - er ist selbst als Produzent tätig und freut sich über euren Besuch auf www.facebook.com/martin.denhollander! For 20 years, Slam have been at the forefront off the UK techno scene having shaped it sound with classics such as ‘Positive Education’ and ‘Step Back’. For this special 20 years of Soma celebration, Slam invites good friends and spectacular producers, Pan-Pot to provide reworks of the classic Lifetime track. 
Pan-Pot are one of the most exciting production duets around today, having garnered success with tracks such as ‘Charly ’ and ‘Captain my Captain’ as well remixes of the like of Booka Shade’s ‘Regenerate’. For this exclusive release on Soma, Pan-Pot lend their talents to Slam’s ‘Lifetimes’, providing two fresh and exciting remixes that throb, pulse and build into instant dancefloor classics. 
The EP kicks of with their ‘Bass Times Remix’ where precise, minimalist percussion, vast soundscapes and distorted basslines are laid down underneath a controlled and stripped back original vocal. The track builds nicely to a vox-laden broken beat drop, and a 2 minute long 4/4 techno stomp. Pan- Pot’s ‘Tribute To Life Remix’ follows with yet more murky soundscapes, a thumping kick drum, progressive builds in percussion and the of course that bassline . Twisting the original track to provide a darkly nuanced and intricate tech-house monster, Pan-Pot do more than justice to this remix.

Anders Trentemøller has become one of the most respected names in cutting edge electronic music in the last few years. His rise to notoriety was sparked by his early, techy releases for Poker Flat and Audiomatique and has since gone on to stellar highs with his own personal take on the  genre, spanning, pop, rock, indie and classical. His debut album 'The Last Resort‘ was released in 2006 to much international acclaim, and the producer also began to become an in-demand remixer in the house and techno world. 

As the decade wore on his sound continued to progress, opening up his studio to more live instrumentation, and a looser, rock-meets electronic vibe with his stunning 'Into The Great Wide Yonder‘ LP. From legendary live shows with the 'Live In Concert‘ tour with a full backing band, to remixes for a whole host of talents outside of the electronic world, to producing new bands like Darkness Falls on the label hfn music, the restless creative is always a powerhouse of productivity.

‘Norwegian cuisine is very characteristic. Traditionally a Norwegian dish does not contain much spices, so the taste of the food is very much straight from nature. Some Norwegian food could be considered a bit hardcore for some, but also enviromentally friendly, as it is built on old traditions of using the resources in your immediate surroundings…’

That’s Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, Norway’s finest disher-up of cosmic techno, who’s whipped up a pumping new album with tracks titled like a tasting menu of his homeland’s underrated cuisine, from soup to nuts. Well, not quite: it’s more like ‘Raakost’ (raw vegetables) to ‘Vafler’ (waffles) – with lashings of ‘Lammelaar’ (dried salted lamb meat), ‘Vossakorv’ (‘a sheep-sausage made in Voss’), and ‘Eggedosis’ (‘what you get when you mix eggs and sugar with a blender. Kids love it… At least, I did when I was younger!’). Yum!

Smalhans was recorded immediately after Lindstrøm’s last, more experimental album Six Cups Of Rebel in July 2011, and its unashamedly 4/4 techno rhythms and bubbling, nutritious analogue synth sounds – mixed by friend and collaborator Todd Terje – are set to inject a vitamin kick to dancefloors everywhere. Lindstrøm’s gorgeous arpeggiations and chord changes can sound mathematical at times (check the clockwork mechanism of ‘Faarikal’), but it’s all born of his intuitive approach to his gear.

‘The process is definitely intuitive. I try all sorts of combination of chords and changes, and just know when something interesting happens. I find myself getting lost in the details. Weighing the ingredients, trying to find the right balance. A little more of this, a little less of that. Making the same dish over and over again, hoping it gets even better. Trying out new recipes and ingredients. Eating it up, and starting again the next day. Just like spending time in the studio…’

Lindstrøm spends a lot of time in that studio, preferring a normal working day and quiet nights at home with his family. In the distant past he has been a folk/country keyboardist, but bought his first sampler around 1999 after moving from his birthplace, Stavanger, to Oslo. With that real-instrument background, he still considers himself an outsider in the hi-tech world of contemporary dance music, but that perspective allows him greater freedom. He has collaborated with Prins Thomas and Christabelle, and remixed LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Franz Ferdinand, Glasser, Best Coast and many more. As a solo artist Lindstrøm has released three albums, It´s A Feedelity Affair in 2006, Where You Go I Go Too in 2008 and Six Cups Of Rebel in 2012, and he’s a several-times winner of the Norwegian Grammy awards.

If today’s minimal dance music is leaving you feeling a bit starved, Smalhans’s full-fat analogue sound will fill you up and keep you glowing. ‘Electronic music is moving in so many directions,’ says Lindstrøm, ‘it’s hard to keep track of all the various twists and turns. Trends come and disappear, new subgenres of subgenres erupt and fade away faster then ever. But the beat lives on, it just comes in new colours and shapes.’

… And flavours. Yes chef!

Slam & Soma deliver two monster remixes from man of the moment Markus Suckut as he redefines ‘Lifetimes’. Markus has been on fire since he burst onto the global techno scene a few years back with release on Stroboscopic Artefacts, Figure SPC & his on SCKT label. His stripped back, thumping style has brought him many big name admirers and Soma are proud that he has lent his style to not only one of our favourite Slam tracks but also his.
Redefinition1 of Lifetimes is Markus at his most uncompromising. Thick, layered kicks and sub bass rattle their way through you as stuttered rhythms and metallic drums rise and fall, always with a sense of purpose. This was made for heads down on the dance floor. 
Redefinition2 opens up Markus’ deeper side. Again, his signature thick low end is sliced open with a shard like high hat, powered with a definite groove. Slowly, a pulsing synth line works it’s way into the track, instantly drawing out the more old school vibe of this track. Markus works the arrangement perfectly, drawing out the frequencies and dropping back in to devastating effect.
Markus has certainly provided two vey modern updates to a classic Soma track and these are sure to destroy any dance floor within range.
