<p>Marino Canal returns to MOOD with a follow up to his 2014 ‘Percolate’ EP and his wonderful remix of label boss Nicole Moudber’s ‘Her Dub Material’, a mix that&#8217;s still doing the damage for so many. As he prepares for the summer’s season madness, Marino very kindly eases in with his trio of new tracks that see him take us on a quite unexpected but most welcomed tangent. <br />
 Continuing the deep and dubby flavour that Nicole left us with, Marino opens his latest EP with the title track, ‘Strain’. Belying its title, the opener shows no sign of taut, sinewy or stressed beats. Instead we are treated a warm, deep and hypnotising house cut. The mesmeric ‘Mercurial’ is up next with its contrasting warm piano chords and icy ivory melody, before Marino closes the EP with the dub daubed sound of &#8216;New Order’.</p>

Red Richards & Simon Sim's - If You Feel It

We travel from Spain to New York, Berlin to Moscow and make a stop in Marseille as Cannibal Ink’s first EP for Days of Being Wild sees the duo collaborates with 4 of the most exciting artists in today’s underground electronic scene. Cannibal Ink’s music is also not scared to invite various music influences into their own, they borrow from disco, techno, acid, and… rockabilly - There is even some loungy Rhodes in there! But far from being a massive chaos of influences, the 4 pieces here are unified by an underlying “noir” and underground feel that permeates their music. 

Opener “Believe In Rock” starts like what could be Run DMC, before introducing a dirty organ, 50’s slap back vocals and guitars and developing into a full on slow disco bomb. A collaboration with Curses, it delivers what the New York / Berlin producer does best by blending new wave tinted disco with Rock & Roll influences. 

Second track is a remix of the first by one of current favorite Russian duo Simple Symmetry. Faster and darker their version discards the pop vocals and puts the distorted guitars forward above a relentless beat. Covered by a detuned synth string line and pitched down vocals, their remix is like a nightmarish take on the original. 

“Road to Annapura” starts like an early EBM track, with echoing pulsating bass and percussion. A collaboration with Berliner Freudenthal, this piece is a slow burning piece of cosmic electro, slowly grooving around oriental motives and textures drenched in reverb and echo. 

The EP closes with the anxious and druggy “Smoking Shit”. We’re in more “classic old school Days of Being Wild “ here, perhaps due to the participation of old pal and Days’ alumni daWad. The tempo is faster, the taste a bit more acid and there is some sleazy slowed down vocal loop whispering something to make sure you stay in your head.

Seminal cuts such as the very first LNOE release, Sasha’s‘Cut Me Down’, reworked by Radio Slave, and ‘Vapourspace’ (Nicole Moudaber Remix) are interspersed with cult favorites, like Henry Saiz ‘I Can Feel it Coming’ which VONDA7 takes to new heights and Locked Groove’s rework of Max Cooper ‘Careless’.

The next release on Matthias Tanzmann’s Moon Harbour will be a first appearance on the label for Steve Lawler with only his second EP of the year. The VIVa Music boss has long been a cornerstone of the underground tech house scene, not only with his own raw productions, but so too because of the talent he nurtures at the label, and the parties he headlines and hosts around the world from Ministry of Sound to Sankeys Ibiza.
The first track is ‘Silk Roads’, a purposeful house track that shows Lawler’s knack for crafting slightly tribal, always engaging grooves with rolling sub bass holding it all together. The production is meticulous, with plenty of contrasting surfaces rubbing against each other, folding in over and over and taking you with them each time. There’s as much for the head as the heel though, with a loft melody floating up top to finish off a classy bit of work.
‘Hoffman’s Potion’ doesn’t mess about and immediately settles into another of Lawler’s trademark grooves. Precision cut claps and hi hats bring height to the low down kicks, whilst muted but slightly ravey stabs add a mischievous edge to the track. Just as you get settled, the final third comes alive again with another lingering melody: it’s a simple yet effective touch that will bring reactions from the floor and keep people locked right until the end.
Refreshingly modern and typically well designed from someone with Lawler’s credentials, Moon Harbour have secured something a rare but deserved outing from the VIVA boss.
