An ode to a bygone era of house music.

After discovering that some of my favorite house records came from the 90s and early 2000s, I spent the last few months searching the depths of the internet for the best tracks I could find that pertained to distinct sounds I had always wanted to play. Something about these tracks' rawness, swing, and overall lack of polish that I couldn't get enough of. From the curation process came the recording phase which for one of the mixes took four tries. I felt like Liam Neeson by the third Taken movie.. like we know how this goes, do we really need to do this again?

Nonetheless, the result of that labor of love are these two mixes. Many people inspired these mixes but few pushed me to newer bounds of music more than Chaos in the CBD, Ian Pooley, The Groove Boys Project, and of course, my brother Kevin.

Inner Chords is a tried and true deep house mix with songs from 1993 to 2005. Tracks that contain but aren't exclusive to ethereal vocals, deep chords, groovy basslines, jazz improvisation, and soulfulness beyond measure permeate the whole mix and will have you headbobbing into the wee hours of the morning. The mix is intended for a night in solo or with friends accompanied by something to wind down the night with: a bowl (or two) and/or a glass of wine.

Old School Deep House Mix (1993 - 2005)

The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. In a city that prides itself on fast walking, fast talking and, as of late, fast BPMs, their music is an invitation to ease into a more relaxing pace.

This RA Podcast comes at a golden time for MUSCLECARS. In May, they released their RA-recommended debut album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea!, whose sultry (and undeniably catchy) lead single "Tonight" has gotten the stamp of approval, and a remix, from New York legend Louie Vega. And this Sunday, they hosted their annual Juneteenth block party outside the Lot Radio, where scores of Black dancers latched onto one another during sets from a multigenerational crew of Black DJs including Ron Trent, Lovie, Shawn Dub and MUSCLECARS themselves. This two-hour-plus mix takes us through the spiralling jazz of Herbie Hancock, the flashy disco of The Originals and lands us, finally, in "Water," the track that also closes out Sugar Honey Iced Tea!.

My 90-minute mix taken from 'Lev & Farrow Presents' at The BBE Store. This was one of my favourite recent gigs, full of dancers and real supporters. Pandar (In the photo) played just before me and had the crowd on ropes by the time I put my first record on. The vibes stayed at a high all night long.

Kerri Chandler has what you might call a taste for props. 99 percent of the time he may be DJing on a completely standard setup, but every now and then he'll throw a curveball in the mix. Sometimes it's something relatively straight-forward, like a keyboard. Sometimes it's much more exotic. He's been known to rock a laser harp. On at least one occasion he appeared onstage alongside hologram vocalists.

That in mind, it's no surprise Chandler is skilled at what might be the most esoteric music player to DJ with: the reel-to-reel tape deck. Unwieldy as they may be, reel-to-reel's sound good enough to earn themselves a spot in the known canon of DJ equipment. Back in the day, "every major club had at least one tape machine it the booth," Chandler says. "Unlike turntables, you don't have to worry about skipping, vibrations or a dirty stylus. In fact at times if I saw the needle was a bit dirty while I was playing out at a club, I would make a quick copy to tape for about a minute, run it back, play the tape, clean the stylus and bring the record back in."

Reel-to-reels run in Chandler's family—he's dedicated this set to the memory of his father, whose birthday was February 27th. They also loom large in his musical education. Seeing Frankie Knuckles and David Morales mix on them was one of his formative experiences. Most DJs would only use one alongside their other gear, but Chandler likes using a few—"one for loops and effects and the other sets for songs and content." Mixing on them isn't easy, but if you feel so inclined you can do a set completely on reel-to-reels. In this 70-minute recording at our London office, Chandler does precisely that.
