This week’s Source to Cycle podcast comes from a British DJ and producer who has made a huge impression on the music scene since his involvement since the early 1990s.  Starting out in London, working for the Freetown label, and DJing both in clubs and on pirate radio, Luke Solomon quickly found himself at the centre of London’s resurgent house scene, alongside the late, great Kenny Hawkes.  Promoting the now legendary Space night at the capital’s Bar Rhumba, Luke hooked up with Chicago DJ Derrick Carter, and the kindered spirits launched the Classic Music Company in 1995.  The label has since gone on to release music from the likes of Tiefschwarz, Isolee, DJ Sneak, Herbert, Gemini, Roy Davis Jnr and countless others.

Luke also makes up one half of Freaks, on his other label Music For Freaks, as well as solo projects on Rekids, Little Creatures and Fullbar, still as busy as he always has been.  Forthcoming releases from Luke include the mix compilation 'Unfinsihed Business Vol 1' on Classic, singles for Local Talk and Toytonics, and a new Freaks album for Rebirth.

CLR Podcast 247 - CTRLS

It is Monday the 18th of November 2013 and we have CTRLS for the first time on the CLR Podcast. The DJ/producer from Copenhagen recently released the "Shifting States EP" on Token Records, which also includes two Sleeparchive remixes, and has a remix of PVS "Arsenal" on M Recordings as well as a remix of Clouds on Turbo coming up soon. As a core artist of the excellent Token imprint we can expect further releases from him on the label in the near future. Apart from his work as CTRLS he forms part of the duo Northern Structures, who have been receiving massive attention and support by some of the biggest players in the scene for their "Self Similarity EP" and their very diverse and always unique live act. Northern Structures combines a variety of musical influences from House over Dubtechno to Drum´n´Bass and focuses on organic and industrial inspired electronic music.

Following the success of Axis Mundi, the duo returns with Contatto an EP that reflects their continuous evolution: a modern vision of techno, deeply rooted in its foundational essence.

The record opens with "Contatto", a fluid and refined track where aquatic synth textures bounce elegantly over a sleek and captivating groove. "Vanta" follows with a more driving and hypnotic energy a stripped-down tool designed to shake the floor with precision and style.

"Twin State" shifts the mood with rolling rhythms and sharp, sophisticated sound design a perfect fusion of past and future aesthetics. "Oroboro" then explores deeper territory, offering warm textures and a seemingly gentle presence, while concealing a powerful low-end drive that makes it both subtle and impactful.

Closing the release, the digital-only "Kinesis" delivers a minimal, synth-driven journey echoing the spirit of classic techno, reimagined through a crisp and modern lens.

Fuse resident Downside delivers the ninth release on Fuse Imprint with Traces Of Spring, a record that reflects both clean articulation and careful tension building. Across four tracks, he explores a balance of intensity and restraint, depicting a narrative that mirrors his evolving role within the club.

Opening with Until It Fades, the A1 sets a hypnotic tone through patient layering and ambient space, hinting at drama while maintaining subtlety. With Blackout Protocol, the atmosphere turns into focus through an imposing, clear low-end that takes control, driving a darker framework designed for moments of deepened urgency. On the flip, Revolt moves with raw immediacy, its rhythm pushing forward with detail and weight, yet strangely uplifting. Closing with the title track, Traces Of Spring offers a suspended atmosphere, delicate in rhythm and melody, it's a reflection of the fragile balance between soft synth tension hanging by a thread and a focused, monumental pace.

With this release, Downside contributes a coherent and articulate statement to the Fuse catalogue, one that captures both the physicality of the dancefloor and the subtleties that extend beyond it.

Probably my deepest track yet titled ‘Polarity’ released as part of Inguma Records 5 Years VA. Available on limited cassette + digital on bandcamp + t-shirt merch.

It reflects heavily on today’s scenarios, polarising views, polarising emotions, uncertain futures, but there is a hint of hope still flickering in the darkness. Like the moment when light appears from behind a storm cloud.

I love the artwork for this, it reminds me to lean into the things that give us hope or keep us together. Even when there is a lot of evil.
