Take a look over Ashley Burchett’s back catalogue and you’ll find the Greater London resident has played an understated yet influential role in purporting British techno. Fifteen years ago Burchett’s prevailing Ø [Phase] project debuted on Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell’s Cosmic Recordings before providing Cosmic ID with its final record in 2002, and since 2007 Burchett's helped mould and define the sound of Token by becoming the label’s marquee artist.

In 2013 the Belgian imprint finally coaxed the debut album from Ø [Phase], Frames Of Reference, described in Tony Naylor’s 4/5 review for Resident Advisor as, “a techno album of real imagination and depth that, when it needs to be, is brutally functional.” Almost two years since its release Ø [Phase] is back with Alone In Time?, his second studio album which adds to the continuous slew of unrivalled long players Token has put out of late. Token spreads the 11-tracks on Alone In Time? across three heavy weight discs, and the music further demonstrates Burchett’s deft skill in linear arrangements shaped to fit the warehouse frame, while painting a colourful, Detroit influenced side to his productions yet to really be heard to this extent before.

This uncharted sound of Ø [Phase] can be found in tracks like “Remote”, the album’s homage to electro, to the jittery, alien grooves of “Spacialize”, “Mo_del” and “Nep-tune”. There’s big room domination on productions like “Orbitron” and “R-Mash”, while the album’s title-track is a journey through Burchett’s conceptual references to cosmology, time and isolation. Burchett explains, "it was always an intention to make another album and now just felt like the right time. Life moves on, we change and grow. As lessons get learned and ideas form, the desire to express them gradually manifests."

Furthermore, Burchett adds, “Frames Of Reference was about overcoming personal struggles and challenges, while Alone In Time? is more forward facing.” With an extensive back catalogue in his wake, Ø [Phase] has become a relied source for the discerning techno DJ and these new, expertly crafted club cuts add to his ever-expanding pool of productions for selectors to choose from, and it’s clear, if the bouncing rhythm of “Blind Eye” and orchestral epic of “The Maze” is anything to go by, Ø [Phase] isn’t only head strong, but standing tall.

A new talent is added to our roster, this time the argentinian Alderaan, after several releases in labels such as Animal farm, Mindtrip, Planet Rhythm and our very own Aine.

He offers five slices of modern techno, heavy percussive based but whit a lot of intelligent elements inside. 

First cut is Ancient Particles, multiple drum layers, heavy reverberation and obsessive sequences as sound palette. 

Parallax follows in the same style but adding more drone action and bell like lines in a clever arrangement. 

Oscar Mulero remixes Retina getting rid of the textures and focusing in rhythm and repetition in a minimalistic remake.

Retina is a cosmic exercise, with galactic resonant bleeps, atmospheres and ambiental components in a dreamy structure.

No quarter returns to percussive territories, again with drones and atmospheres floating over the beat in an hypnotic travel thru deepness.

Timeless techno for the mind and for the body, soul as a weapon.

Mysterious newcomer Banke delivers a profound debut for TOKEN81. The Totem EP's tempered sophistication and clear sense of purpose belies Banke's neophyte status, establishing him instead in the ranks of Token's most experienced artists in terms of skill and ingenuity. 

Simenon's tense introduction is met with understated, yet unmistakable fragments of Detroit in the form of a hypnotic, high-end glissando, rolling drum work and built-up tasteful stabs. Cheerlead's delicate trill is mimicked and answered in a hypnotic call-and-response over a carefully measured low-end. 

Totem, the title track, has a traditionalist opening that's purposeful and composed, with Banke patiently building tension through his crafty and artful arrangement. An oddball breakdown of mind-bending synth work places the record firmly in the avant-garde, while its detailed percussion retains dancefloor functionality. Strattera's hyper-focused mid and off-beat brushing hi-hat opens out to become disorienting, multi-layered trip.

For her third installment, Rabe delivers 2 original tracks with her indistinguishable haunting sound, driven by martial rhythmic structures in opposition to the fluid, evolving soundscapes that balance her music.

Equally thought out was the inclusion of remixes by Nur Jaber and Orphx whose rework of ‘Lucy’s Dream’ seamlessly incorporate that eerie undertone, a constant in Rabe’s work, that seems to lure the listener thru the haze that separates reality and the dream states.

This is the first long distance trip in our digital branch, showcasing a complete album by Divide who is the alias of Davide from the Italian Syntaxism duo. In this body of work comprised of 13 tracks, you can find almost every colour in the techno sound palette, from the ambient intro Parsec to the equally soundscaped last track Alfa Persei. In between these two relaxed pieces there is a galore of beats and synths.

The album grows logically, building up as a whole opera. Punto_ω evolves from a relentless groove spiced with FM bells and resonant bleeps to the solid and slow paced Sfera Celeste, almost dubby, with subtle synth melodies in jazzy scales.

Punto_γ starts to bring things directly to danceable territories in a complex synth crescendo. Followed by Declinazione, with random sequences and tight 909 drum workout. Asymmetrical notes blend to each other giving this chaos feeling that sure dj’s like Jeff Mills will love and play.

Coordinate follows in similar parameters, alien like melodies and arpeggios over a shuffled beat, complex and always evolving. Cassiopea runs in similar parameters, but with a more aggressive sound approach.

Antares introduces distortion and harshness and acts as a powerful tool as well as the twisted Galileo, elastic and gummy but still powerful.

Centaurus boosts the high frequencies in the beginning as the rest of the elements build from below, the kick appears after a few bars putting all groove in context as the mechanical synth lines take over.

Andromeda is made of fat drums and resonant craziness spiced with wise handled distortion and Nube reminds us the best moments of solid nineties techno: hi BPM, well cooked chords and 909.

A great and detailed work that showcases the skills of this producer, aside from the currently degraded pseudo rave invasion. Again music from the future made today.
