Jeán et Joie is the lyrical child of artist and songwriter, Grey Jeán. Their music can be described as mournful folk with a hopeful glow. Their songs combine simple instrumentals and poetic, stream-of-consciousness style storytelling. Common themes can be found throughout each piece of music: celestial realities and the natural world, lived experience and a strong sense of emotional integrity.
Grey Jeán grew in a household surrounded by music. Their three sisters shared their immense talents through angelic harmonies and polyphonic hymns drawn from the Catholic faith in which they were raised. Grey began using their voice to express and to write their own music while navigating a challenging teenage experience living at home in Mountain Home, Arkansas. They carried the power of song forward into every chapter, first in choirs, then open mic nights, and later into live performances and virtual concerts during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Grey played and wrote piano pieces for the San Diego punk blues band, Teeming Dreams, and in 2022 formed Jeán et Joie as a début of their growing personal repertoire. The band has been playing and recording together since Grey and their fiancé Gabrielle Néla teamed up with the drummer, guitar duo Ikaika and Dash from the LA band, Flamango Bay. They have since moved to North Carolina and are building a presence back in the forests and woods where Grey first discovered their musical identity.
Their upcoming EP Bramble is set to release in beginning of 2024, preceded by singles: Glory Be and Fried Rice.

This is my reinterpretation/remix of the song X by the awesome English band Smilex. The initial plan was to produce something industrial/cyberpunk, but I was seduced by the idea of making a rockabilly version of X, with hints of punk rock.

Huge thanks to Lee (lead singer), who kindly offered me the invitation to do a remix of the song -- he's probably regretting it by now, but it's too late, man. 😄

Boasting an ear splitting career spanning over a decade, Smilex are the band who have done it all. Several releases on Quickfix Recordings (who discovered Youthmovies) and spots on various compilations & singles clubs, including a split ep with The Young Knives & a collaboration with MC Lars, have made Smilex a band renowned within their native Oxford. Explosive live shows – betraying a tendency for reckless self-endangerment coupled with a drive to put the audience's experience above all else – have led local music bible Nightshift to dub Smilex “Oxford's one band Riot”. Infamous live antics have caught the eyes and ears of musical types across the country, earning them the title of Playmusic's “best unsigned live act of 2010”, whilst securing slots playing beneath (and raising the bar for) the likes of The Damned, The Datsuns, and The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster.

This song was composed in memory of my little girl, who passed away a year ago. It's a tribute filled with love and nostalgia, a musical offering that seeks to embrace her memory. The melody is built on soft melodic pianos and enveloping guitars, accompanied by harmonious synthesizers that create an ethereal atmosphere. The sounds of the sea and the songs of sirens emerge like echoes of the soul, representing a bridge between this world and hers. Each note is a caress, each chord a tear turned into light. "From The Broken Stone" tells the story of a legacy that was never planned, but born from the cracks of the past. It begins with a whispered nightmare, journeys through a cinematic rock ballad filled with pain and hope, culminates in a cathartic instrumental storm, and finally finds peace in a reconciliatory, orchestral epilogue. It is a narrative of how the deepest wounds can become windows, and how new hope can grow from the rubble of a life.

This work would not have been possible without the pioneers of epic, narrative rock. It is a deep and respectful homage to the musical vision of bands like Deep Purple (for the soulful Hammond organ and explosive dynamics), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (for the sound-painting synthesizers and anthemic choruses), and Marillion (for the courage to tell complex, suite-like stories).

This epic does not attempt to copy them, but to honor their spirit: the spirit of a music that takes its time, that delves deep, and that takes the listener on a journey from which they return changed. We invite you to embark on this journey.
