There is a glitch in the Finale file for this - the tempo periodically slows down and then returns to normal. I originally wrote this as a big band chart for the second semester of Jazz Arranging and Composing with Dominic Spera at IU back in 1981.

The working title had been "From the Void", but I'm not sure that really works with what this has become. I'm now thinking about "The Four Winds". The solos are for Flute, Flugelhorn, and Violin.

Summer Swarms

Draft of a combo chart on a tune I wrote in the 80s. The inspiration was a log drum patch on my DX-7. I started with the log drum riff (which is what piano is playing here)and wrote the horn line to go over the top of it.

Trying to practice getting a lot out of something simple, in this case, four minor ninth chords. For variation I use different "melodies", vary one of the melodies, reverse the chord sequence, change the tempo (double time), and use some diminished chords in a canonical section. This version also transposes the riffs up a whole step in two of the solo sections
