To kick off the new year, we are thrilled to welcome TOYTOY Resident, Owner, and Co-Founder Fabio for our 5th episode of the Underground Africa Podcast Series. As a cornerstone of South Africa’s techno community, Fabio shares some inspiration behind his send-off mix into 2025:

"Earlier this year I was sent a mix from an artist I really like, it was a live recording from a festival and it really inspired me. Every track was unique and stood out but at the same time had some common thread that made the whole set make perfect sense. 

For my edition of the Underground Africa Podcast Series, I didn’t want to simply try recreate the mix I had heard but rather interpret it in a way that works for my style and personality. What this means is that the mix is by no means linear, it’s ebbs and flows not just in styles but in energy and intensity. For me, it’s all techno, has hypnotic and psychedelic undertones and hopefully challenges the listener’s interpretation of the genre.
 
I hope that you enjoy the mix, I really enjoyed making it and exploring my collection with a particular idea in mind. I made a playlist, recorded the mix in one take and haven’t made any changes. So it’s kinda like a live mix, with a few imperfections along the way. Much of this past year has pushed me to rethink and revisit my own perceived formulaic interpretation of techno. So this is very much part of the questioning and adjustment to that interpretation."
