Just One Dance

Over the last generation, the United States prison systems have grown at a rate unparalleled in history, creating what many call a Prison Industrial Complex. What happens to our legal system, our Constitution, our democracy, when a substantial part of the population feel it in their economic self-interest to lock up more and more people for longer and longer sentences? Which industries are a part of the Prison Industrial Complex? How are they profiting from prisons? And how are they using their power to affect criminal law and public opinion? How are people organizing to stop or slow prison growth? What is prison abolition?

To the extent we think about these questions at all, it is because of the tireless work of Angela Davis. She has toured the country for the last decade speaking out against prison expansion, and she was the prime mover behind the 1997 conference Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex, which drew over 3,500 participants to Berkeley, California.

This 1997 talk from Boulder, Colorado offers a succinct yet compelling argument that the time to stop prison expansion is now. Angela Davis is a legendary speaker, known for the clarity & subtlety of her thought and the compelling compassion of her delivery.

Aside from talking about the Prison Industrial Complex, Angela Davis discusses the evils of Nike, corporate crimes, the demonization of immigrants, and crimes against the environment, amongst other issues.

Wicked City is a live ‘Future Funk’ project originally started by Krafty Kuts and Erb N Dub. 

As the music developed so did the members involved. Dynamite MC, Skope, Steve Yamaha & Damein Soul soon joined the team. In the summer 2014 Wicked City remixed 2 Kill Paris tracks for OWSLA. Since then they have finished writing their debut EP and putting together their full live show.

Born Tomás Calvo in 1990 and raised in Bay City, Michigan, Tomás Calvo is a Daughters of the American Revolution award-winning essayist, composer and performer. 

In 2001 Tomás Calvo began studying glockenspiel under the direction of Craig Heydenburg and caught the "mallet percussion bug.” 

His first musical, a dramatization of the emergency landing of the U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, made a splash at the Williams College twenty-four hour theatre festival in 2009 for a run of one performance. 

Tomás Calvo attended Grand Valley State University where he composed the score of the the Frankenmuth Film Festival award-winning movie musical, For the Love of Jazz (dir. Christina and Stephanie Choriatis, 2013). Rumours persist about Tomás Calvo’s sudden departure from the university. 

In 1999 Tomás Calvo was the recipient of the President's Fitness Award under the Clinton administration. 

Tomás Calvo currently works as a nonprofit media production intern in Bay City, Michigan where he is about to unveil a new score about deception, intrigue and a botched quinceañera.
