And so, after a really long battle, my dear Mum finally passed away two days ago.  It's so true what they say, nothing can prepare you, for how you're going to feel, even if you know it's coming.  So, as a tribute to her, here are two hours of some of my most favourite, emotive deep house music, expressing myself in the best way I know how ... with something quite different and special to end with, especially for her.

It all began 25 years ago.

I've never dedicated a mix to someone, until now. But it's thoroughly deserved.

Here's how it all started...

Two south London guys met at a Wetherspoon for a £2.99 Burger and a beer (it really was that cheap back then) and we kinda hit it off. We had a lot of mutual friends, who's been to both parties, and we liked the same music, and Kinky Malinki was born.

Like all new nights, we had moments of tears, and joy, laughter and unbelievable stress, but we percevered and We filled Imperial Gardens, The Glasshouse, Aquarium, The Cross, Turnmills, The Minitstry and eventually Pacha every single month.  I'll never forget the Kiss Fm guest mix and interview, where we had 100 people in the street listening to it while our club night was running.

Meeting Paul provided some of my proudest moments, and most definitely, some of the best nights out I can remember. 

This mix isn't old material, but it's a homage to the sound, the vibe, the crowd, the smiles and laughter and most of all the mayhem on the dancefloor that was created every month, without fail. 

I can't take any accolade for Kinky Malinki's longetivity, as I bailed out after 9 or 10 years.  That is all down to Paul and his passion for running parties, and what is now a legendary night.

KM is 25 years old next year, and he's one of the nicest, most humble, non egotistical club people you'll ever meet.  Now he's a bonafied Legend of our scene.

So I'm dedicating this to him.  

I have tagged a few people that were regulars back in the day.  Some were DJ's, others friends, all were a part of the experience that made Kinky Malikni such a well loved and popualr night. 

I have so many memories from back then.  How clubs around the country wanted us to visit. Manchster, Leicester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Ibiza, too many for this old brain to keep a track of.

It's such a huge achievement to make it to 25 years in such an evolving environment.  

To all the people I met over the years through KM, I salute you all.  

To the friends who married partners met at Kinky Malinki, you're welcome lol!

I hope this mix captures the very essence of what really was a very special night out where you could catch some of the best DJ's in the scene and the best residents that any club has ever had, period.

These are my Kinky Classics.  They might, or might not be yours. They are definitely a bit of nostalgia from one of the best eras for house music there's ever been 💃🏻🕺❤️.

There are two periods of house music that were really important to me. 1993 when I got my first DJ residency at Labrynth in Dalston Lane, and 1998 to 2007 when I was a promoter and resident DJ at Kinky Malinki.

This mix is a good reflection of the music I played at The Imperial Gardens, The Glasshouse and Pacha London over those formative Kinky years.

Shaka's new drop on Selections is a delightful one that combines real jazz melodies with authentic deep house. Opener 'Sacred Church' (feat Eve - main mix) immediately wins you over with the buys keys, Rhodes chords and eco-system of cosmic synths that busy about while the soulful vocal oozes cool. Jon Cutler's Distant Music mix pairs things back and makes it more of a smoky late night sound and 'Shaker Games' then blisses you out with dusty drum depths and incidental chords that are magically feel good. 'Get Me Higher' shuts down with some superb US house vibes.

A journey through 35 years of house from the godfather of UK rave. 

In popular mythology, the '90s are without question, the halcyon days of dance music—an era of free raves and unadulterated hedonism. It's a myth that Matthew Nelson, AKA Slipmatt, knows better than most–he was there. 

During the late '80s, as the rave scene in the UK began to boom, Nelson began moonlighting as a DJ. He would land his first residency at Raindance, the East London rave that launched in September 1989 and would become the UK's first legal rave. By 1991 , he'd reach number two in the UK charts with "On A Ragga Tip" as one-half of SL2 and two years later, sell over 10,000 copies of the first pressing of SMD#1.

Nelson has got a lot to share (as you'll see in his interview) so we'll let him do the talking. He's been variously called the godfather of rave and happy hardcore, but what you'll hear on RA.958 is as "a journey through my 35 years of house." A DJ with this much pedigree brings much more than that, of course: touching on the breakbeat, jungle and acid house that soundtracked that golden age, as well as nods to the rich cross-pollination with scenes beyond the UK, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You."
