Rather than referring to the ten protruding appendages on the end of your feet, the “toé”, with an acute accent on the “e”, under which the producer, researcher and DJ Mr. Toé works, is a plant allegedly of the divine type. Taking the name of a plant which is used as an hallucinogen by Amazonian shamans, the expatriate Chilean (now taken root in Colombia) makes “electronic music of the jungle”. An organic fusion of ancestral Afro- and Amerindian-Latin culture, Mr. Toé’s enchanting compositions centre around the sharing and experience of Latin American heritage, considering the “symbiosis of African and Spanish music” which blends to make something uniquely Latinx.

“This session, or ritual, aims to transport us to that mysterious America. Always fighting, through the hand of ancestral and futuristic sounds, it has the objective of generating a hybrid trance that projects us and reconnects us with the forces of mother earth and the cosmos.”

“Les heureux tropiques” (The happy tropics) is a set of sketches from adventures of travelers that come to South America and fall in love with the warm breeze and the vibes we have. David Byrne: award-winning music legend, Talking Heads frontman, serial collaborator and now Meltdown curator has invited Francois & The Atlas Mountains and L’homme Tranquille guest musicians Djiga Boubacar and Sanou Darra to join him and a wealth of artists including Anna Calvi and Matthew Herbert this August at London’s Southbank Centre. Francois & The Atlas Mountains will be performing tracks from African EP L’homme Tranquille on August 25th at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre.

In the summer of 2013, Francois & The Atlas Mountains took a 10 day trip to Africa to tour and meet up with local musicians, with the intention of collaborating. In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Francois jammed with Papa Djiga Boubacar (on ngoni), Luc Kyenbreogo (bass ngoni) and Sanou Darra (balaphon) at the French Cultural Center, building on some simple compositions Francois had already prepared that later blossomed into ‘Ayan Filé’.

Recorded inside a wood-fired sauna in Nalovardo, after a wonderful day on the mountain top — a calm autumn day when the raw evening air whispered of the cold soon to come.
Each splash of water on the stones turned into steam and rhythm, echoing the contrast between warmth and frost.
A sonic ritual where nature, body, and sound melt together — pure Phuse energy, organic and alive.

A bonus track from Alone with the Lonesome Brothers CD. Recorded 9 years ago in Lou's Basement; with a beautiful moment preserved in time as Steven Jr. is amused by a kitten. Dedicated to all parents.

[WIP] Chilled Beats 9 - where it's at

Following the first year of Mateo Kingman’s international touring, AYA Records - new imprint from ZZK Records - is releasing a collection of remixes from his debut album "Respira" (breathe).  Few times have we had such an overwhelming response to a new album by an up and coming artist and it's heart-warming to find his work so inspiring for musicians and producers from around the globe. With versions from Japan (Ground), Chile (Matanza) passing through the United States (Jeffrey Paradise from Poolside) amongst others. We can see how songs mutate and adopt new personalities in different hands, exploring new atmospheres and rhythms, down tempos in dynamic songs, inflections and accents, textures and new attributes that appear as the essence of artistic expression and collaboration. This creative transmission attests to an endless quality of the original material and it's our pleasure to share this sampling of remixes to accompany Mateo's upcoming European tour this fall, with debut shows in Amsterdam at ADE and Paris at Hasard Ludique.
