"'If I Can't Be With You' is about the all-consuming feeling you get when you first fall in love with someone and all you want is to be with that person 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," Carrie explains. "I remember being a teenager and every time I started dating a boy I would have these butterflies in my stomach all of the time and I would talk about it nonstop with my girlfriends. When they would ask me questions like, 'what happens if he breaks up with you?' I would say, 'I'd rather DIE' in the most dramatic fashion possible. I've definitely matured out of that stage of puppy love, but I have always been a hopeless romantic and when I fall, I fall hard, and this song is a testament to that."

My friend Joee Corso had a guitar riff
that hit me. I wrote the first two verses
and the chorus then played it for him on
the phone. We had a song. I produced his previous
band Abbey Booth and they recorded "Divine Love"
with Chris Pierce singing back up.
I later added a third verse. The song fit Thee Holy
Brothers like a spiritual glove so we cut it with 
James Gadson (Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Beck)
on drums. Sometimes when we play the song live,
i am always taken aback when the audience
sings along with the chorus without being prompted to.
