Hey Harry Hay

Inspired by the Parable of Immortality ( A ship leaves)  By Henry Van Dyke. I was thinking about grief and what gets passed down from generation to generation.

There He Goes

I wrote this to reconcile some of the dysfunction I grew up in and carried into my adult relationships.

The First Thing

Inspired by a Rolling Stone interview with Robert Downey Jr. He was describe as whirling when there was a void in the conversation. It was a lovely way to describe his restlessness and it reminded my of how I spin in my mind and when I feel scared. I usually freeze or fly when I am in danger. I am learning to stay and ask for help.

When The Void Looms

I had a very realistic dream that scared me because in the dream I killed someone. The next day it occurred to me that the dream was really about letting go of a toxic relationship. I killed the part of me that was still stuck in the past and suffering. (No one was harmed in the making of this song).

Dream

I heard Alice Walker describe our society as one that can barely view a beautiful thing without trying to change it. Alice Walker is my sherpa sometimes. She shared an African proverb that sums up our responsibility to the earth and each other so perfectly "The ax went into the woods and the tree said; the handle is one of us".

Tommy Keenum is a Nashville based singer/songwriter/instrumentalist.  In 2000 he left a successful career as a visual artist and designer to become a full time musician. Since then he has written and recorded five critically acclaimed albums in styles that range from retro- pop and jazz to folk and r&b. He is first and foremost a singer and is best known for his dramatic covers of classic pop songs. "Coming from the visual arts world has had a great impact on my songwriting and music" Keenum says. "I love for lyrics to tell a story the way a painting or movement does and when I'm singing I imagine a visual and then sing the soundtrack." Tommy is currently in the studio recording a jazz album of covers that utilizes only bass and vocal to re-imagine songs from his favorite songwriters.
