I wrote this to reconcile some of the dysfunction I grew up in and carried into my adult relationships.

The First Thing

Inspired by a Rolling Stone interview with Robert Downey Jr. He was describe as whirling when there was a void in the conversation. It was a lovely way to describe his restlessness and it reminded my of how I spin in my mind and when I feel scared. I usually freeze or fly when I am in danger. I am learning to stay and ask for help.

I heard Alice Walker describe our society as one that can barely view a beautiful thing without trying to change it. Alice Walker is my sherpa sometimes. She shared an African proverb that sums up our responsibility to the earth and each other so perfectly "The ax went into the woods and the tree said; the handle is one of us".

Tommy Keenum is a Nashville based singer/songwriter/instrumentalist.  In 2000 he left a successful career as a visual artist and designer to become a full time musician. Since then he has written and recorded five critically acclaimed albums in styles that range from retro- pop and jazz to folk and r&b.
